Yoga block enhances stretch

Using a yoga block in your practice helps bring the floor up to you, allowing you to focus on correct technique while feeling a sense of stability. Over time, your body will lossen up and you'll be able to balance without the use of this tool.

Begin by kneeling on a level, padded surface with a yoga block nearby. Straighten your left leg, placing your left heel on the floor with your knee and toes facing upward. Make sure your left heel is directly across from your right inner knee. Move the block behind your left knee. Rest your left arm on your left thigh. On an inhale, reach your right arm overhead with your palm facing inward.

Special Report: Childrens' Yoga

Children these days are busier than ever, overstimulated and overloaded with information and technology. Some people swear by the calming effect of yoga on children. Yoga studios for kids, such as Butterfly Yoga in Verdun, are becoming increasingly popular. Teachers like Angie Continisio are convinced that today's children need to calm down.

"We're always in a rush to do things," she told CTV's Tarah Schwartz. "We're always running from one place to another. So I teach the children to breathe, to be grounded, to be present in the moment." Children like D'arcy McCready love it. "It makes me feel in harmony and in a peaceful place," she said. Only eight years old and already McCready sees life as being full to the brim. She says that she has a busy life.

"I have to take care of my sisters cat a little, I have to watch over my baby brother to make sure he doesn't do anything wrong, I have to do my homework, I have to do lots of stuff.

Yoga guru Ramdev to open centre in Nepal

After hitting headlines with his announcement of contesting the next general elections in India with a new party, Indian yoga guru Swami Ramdev is now set to open a yoga ashram in Nepal soon. In 2007, Ramdev's first yoga camp in Kathmandu ran into trouble after alleged opposition by the Maoists. Nepal's Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and President Ram Baran Yadav are Ramdev enthusiasts. When the president recently went to India on his first official visit, he made a trip to the Haridwar yoga ashram.

Yoga that touches the heart

What a flower has in common with yoga is anyone's guess. That's until you meet Frenchman Gilles Chuyen and experience a class of 'Flower Yoga' conducted by him. "The class doesn't have a rigid structure and is not time bound. It starts and ends with a meditation, involving breathing and visualisation, especially focusing on the opening of the heart chakra, like a lotus flower, hence the name Flower Yoga," says Gilles who chose Delhi over France to make a career in dance. So while Madison Avenue in New York is abuzz with gastronomic yoga, Saket here in New Delhi is being treated with Flower Yoga, a heady cocktail of yoga, pilates and dance.

The Yoga of Sex Muscles

Today's PC muscle exercises, or Kegel exercises, are not the ones your mother might have done. Oh no, they've been upgraded a whole lot so it's surprising that they aren't considered one of the "yogas". The truth is that they are a type of yoga. Mindfulness, along with these physical exercises, was taught by many ancient traditions for both men and women.

Dashing off a couple of squeezes here and there is not what I'm talking about. Learning and practicing the correct way to do Kegel exercises isn't hard but it is important to do them right for the desired physical benefits. There are many reasons to do these little gems of internal exercise. They radically improve arousal, blood flow to the pelvic region, strength of grip of the phallus during intercourse, bladder control, amount of orgasm and strength of orgasm, lasting longer, stronger erections, prostate health, thickness of pelvic floor muscles, health of internal organs and more. I recently had to have a sonogram of my lower abdomen and the doctor exclaimed, with some excitement, that my uterus looked like that of a 35 year old. I'm quite a bit older than that, and have had three grown children too, but I attribute this to years of doing my Kegels.

'Yoga' polymer shifts shape with changing temperature

A material commonly used in fuel cells can 'remember' up to three different shapes, and revert to each one at different temperatures, according to new research. The new research unmasks the versatility of a new type of polymer, Nafion, reports New Scientist.

Tao Xie at General Motors in Warren, Michigan, twisted and stretched a Nafion strip into three distinct shapes, and found that it reverted to each shape at the appropriate temperature. Nafion becomes softer as it is heated. At 140 degrees Celsius Xie stretched it into a particular shape, which was locked in the polymer's "memory" as it cooled to 107 degrees Celsius and stiffened.

Can yoga slow down aging?

Many people think yoga is only for the young and flexible. Actually, people of all ages and fitness levels can benefit from yoga practice, and it's never too late to start.Yoga keeps the body and mind young in a number of ways. First, it has been shown to keep the joints and spine lubricated and flexible, preventing and easing arthritis.

It also lengthens muscles, developing flexibility, which is the key to mobility. It is said that if you practice yoga, you will still be able to bend over and tie your shoes when you're 80.Balance is another benefit of yoga practice. Older people tend to fall more easily as the natural sense of balance decreases. Yoga challenges that and redevelops a sense of balance.
