Details about Nature Conservation Act

The Nature Conservation Act was enacted by the Parliament of Queensland, Australia in 1992 for the purpose of protecting its national parks, nature refuges and wildlife areas. The act mandates gathering information and identifying critical habitats so as to effectively manage the native wildlife and cultural heritage of Queensland. The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) is the governmental agency responsible for administering the act.
Details about Nature Conservation Act
1. Conservation Management:
DERM was formed in 2009 with the merger of the Department of Natural Resources and Water and the Environmental Protection Agency. As part of its responsibility for administering the Nature Conservation Act, DERM is developing management profiles for all ecosystems and species located in Queensland. The profiles are designed to achieve improved conservation by: (1) sufficiently identifying the wildlife and vegetation in each ecosystem; (2) identify threats posed to these areas; and (3) provide guidance for best-management practices to minimize identified threats.

2. Threatened Species:
Under the NCA, all native wildlife is protected, yet some native animals and plants have declined in numbers and are in danger of becoming extinct. Part of DERM’s management responsibility includes categorizing threatened species using these classifications: extinct in the wild, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened and least concern. Currently there are 16 mammals, 15 frogs, 14 birds, eight reptiles, four fish and two butterflies that are considered endangered in Queensland.

3. Nature Refuges:
The NCA recognizes the importance of community participation in nature conservation and, in furtherance of that goal, DERM promotes nature refuges as one such community-based approach. A nature refuge is a voluntary agreement between a private land owner and the government that acknowledges the owner’s commitment to manage and preserve the land in accordance with conservation values. The agreement also recognizes the owner’s use of the land to generate an income and maintain a standard of living that is sustainable and compatible with conservation values. Nature refuges currently comprise the second-largest expanse of protected areas in Queensland.

4. Parks and Forests:
DERM’s management of Queensland’s national parks and forests is intended to provide for the permanent preservation of the area’s natural condition, protected from human interference. Recreational activities in these areas are regulated by the department and must conform to its rules. Queensland’s national park are set aside forever and can only be revoked or canceled by an act of Parliament.

5. Cultural Heritage:
An important part of Queensland’s cultural heritage is Aboriginal rock art found throughout the Central Queensland Sandstone Belt, some dating back 19,000 years. The images left on stone by the area’s Aboriginal people are some of the most significant in Australia and its importance is recognized worldwide. Aboriginal people and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service work together to protect these places. Damaging or even touching Aboriginal rock art is a serious offense under the Nature Conservation Act.

Steps for selecting a USA Political Party

There are several factors that should influence the choice of a political party in the United States. Your political views and those of the various political parties are, interesting, often not the most important factors.Party registration determines eligibility to participate in that party’s caucuses, to serve as a delegate to that party’s presidential nominating convention, to seek that party’s nomination for office, and to advance in the party’s leadership. In most of the United States, one’s choice of a political party also determines eligibility for voting in the primary election. And the primary election is often the more significant election. Here’s how to choose your political party in the United States.
Steps for selecting a USA Political Party
1. Find out whether your state has open, closed or semi-open primary elections.

2. Determine if your state has closed primaries in which you can only vote in your party’s primary. That is, if you are a registered Democrat, then in the primary you can only choose amongst the Democrat candidates. Find out which of the two parties is stronger in your Congressional district. You can determine this be looking at the voter registrations for your district.

3. Find out the party affiliations of your elected officials. If your local Congressional District is strongly partisan, and is considered a “safe” district for one party, you should join that party. Those primaries will be the more important, and therefore your vote will have more influence. In some districts that are overwhelmingly Democrat, for instance, the Republican Party doesn’t even have contested primaries, because whoever wins the Democrat primary is all but assured to win in the general election.

4. Join the more powerful political party. If your state has completely open primaries (you can vote in whatever party primary you want regardless of your registration), but one party is dominant, you should still join that party if you wish to run for office, participate in the national party convention, or participate in the party caucus. You can work for the issues and candidates you support within the more powerful party.

5. Investigate the issues. If your state has completely open primaries, and has two or more viable political parties, then investigate the parties’ platforms, or position statements on the issues. Don’t overlook the minor parties: Libertarian, Green Party and the Constitution Party. Determine which party most closely champions your beliefs on the issues you feel are most important. That is the party you should join.

Steps for renovating an old Lawn

A lawn is only as good as the soil beneath it. Learning how to renovate an old lawn by improving the soil is one of the best ways to upgrade your landscape. It doesn’t take an expert, just a little bit of know-how and a willingness to work.
Steps for renovating an old Lawn
1. Check the moisture content of the soil. Dig down about 6 inches in several places in your yard.

2. Grab a small handful of soil at each spot and squeeze it. If water drips from your hand, there is too much moisture in the soil. If no water drips, but the soil leaves a wet outline on your hand, the soil moisture level is good. Soil that forms a ball in your hand and breaks easily or squeezes between your fingers and feels slick may be borderline adequate. Dry, crumbly or powdery soil is too dry and needs more water.

3. Correct drainage problems in wet areas by raising the grade (level) of the soil with good topsoil. Use your wheelbarrow to transport larger amounts of soil. In dry areas, increase irrigation and change the grade to retain more water.

4. Check for soil compaction by pushing a large screwdriver into the soil. If you have difficulty doing this, the soil may need to be loosened up by a process called aeration.

5. Aerate the lawn. The best type of aerator is the kind that removes cylindrical plugs of soil from the ground. Follow the directions that come with the aerator.

6. Dethatch the lawn if you see a lot of dead compacted grass. Follow the directions that come with the dethatcher.

7. Determine the soil’s pH levels by purchasing a soil test kit and testing for mineral deficiencies. You can find test kits at home improvement stores. Follow the directions that come with the kit.

8. Spread new grass seed where needed. See the “Tips” section below & apply soil nutrients as indicated by the soil test.

9. Apply compost and a slow-release fertilizer to the lawn based on the results of your soil test.

10. Water daily until your new lawn seed has developed a 2- to 4-inch root system. Control weeds. Renovating your lawn does take some work, but the end results are well worth the effort.

World Cup performance from Alicia Keys and Black Eyed Peas

World Cup performance from Alicia Keys and Black Eyed Peas

Alicia Keys and Black Eyed Peas are to perform at a concert in South Africa that will officially “kick off” this year’s World Cup football tournament. Shakira, John Legend and Angelique Kidjo will also appear at the event, to be held in Johannesburg on 10 June. The 2010 World Cup begins the following day and runs until 11 July. Jerome Valcke, of football’s governing body Fifa, said the pop concert would be a testament to the universal and unifying power of football and music. We are thrilled to have a concert of such magnitude and performing talent raise the curtain on the first Fifa World Cup in Africa.

The concert – the first to be held on the eve of the tournament – will be produced by Emmy award-winner Kevin Wall and his company Control Room. The event will also feature musical performances by popular African artist and appearances by past and present football legends. 2010 will mark the first time the Fifa World Cup will be played in Africa, said Wall. So it seemed fitting to celebrate this momentous occasion with a festival of live music from Africa and beyond.

Other artists lined up to appear include Malian duo Amadou & Miriam, South African band the Parlotones and Colombian musician Juanes. Proceeds will benefit 20 Centres for 2010, an official charity campaign dedicated to building 20 public health centres across Africa.

Steps to recognize a sleep apnea

Sleep apnea  is a common condition that affects over 12 million people nationwide. Sleep apnea causes a person to stop breathing several times per night with episodes lasting 30 seconds or more. Learn how to diagnose sleep apnea in order to find methods to control the disorder.
Steps to recognize a sleep apnea
1. Know that although all people are susceptible to sleep apnea, those with a higher risk include people who are male, overweight and over the age of 40.

2. Realize that sleep apnea can cause weight gain, elevated blood pressure and headaches. Left unchecked, sleep apnea is dangerous to a person’s overall health.

3. Understand the types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is when something blocks the airways during sleep, causing a person to stop breathing. Central sleep apnea is not caused by a blockage, but by the brain’s inability to relay a message to breathe. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of the obstructive and central versions.

4. Keep a diary of your sleep patterns. Have your spouse or a close friend monitor your sleep for 2 or 3 nights. She should record variations in snoring, whether or not you are asleep and any breathing problems that occur. You can also record yourself or visit a sleep center to be monitored.

5. Expect your doctor to take a medical history and to examine your mouth and nasal passages for any blockages that might cause your sleep apnea. He may also run diagnostic tests like an x-ray or CT scan to look at your head and throat areas. A referral to a sleep clinic for a sleep study should be expected as well.
