Hub-Maker Phil Wood Passes Away [UPDATED]
BAXTER, IA (BRAIN)—Phil Wood, the man responsible for sealed hubs and bottom brackets, died on March 14 at his daughter's home in Roseville, California. He was 83.
He started the Phil Wood Company in 1971 as primarily a hub maker, though he offered other components. He sold the business to Peter Enright and a group of investors in 1991.
“I feel so lucky to have talked with him about a week before he passed away, and he mentioned again that he was so lucky to sell the business when he did,” said Enright, Phil Wood Company’s president.
“We talked off and on over the years, usually to catch up on news about his friends in the bike business. But he was quite happy to return to the farm after selling the business to help raise his granddaughter,” Enright added.
Wood was a problem-solver working at Food Machinery Corporation. Had he not been bothered chasing bearings for a hub he was rebuilding for his daughter, sealed-bearing hubs might have taken years to hit the bike market, Enright noted.
“He was complaining to Spence Wolf about why no one offered a sealed bearing hub and Wolf told him to make his own hub. A little while later he asked Spence how many he should make. It took Spence a bit to remember what he was talking about. He said make 50 hubs and the business was launched,” Enright said.
Wood’s family is deciding on funeral arrangements at this time.
“I’m glad he and I were able to have that last chat. He was a little bothered he wasn’t as ambulatory as he once was but he was content to move on,” Enright said.
A memorial service for Phil and his wife, Vada, who passed away a few years ago, will be held on April 17, at the Calgary Baptist Church in Los Gatos, California, at 11:00 a.m. Phil is survived by his six children.

2010 Giant Reign - Air or Not?
Looking to get an all-mountain, heavy XC bike.
I'm pretty sold on a new Reign 0.
I'm 6'1" and weight about 220, is the air suspension up to task? Or should I just swap to coil.
Have ZERO experience with air suspension but am not afraid to try something new. Just curious what people think of the DHX 5.0 air and Fox 32 Talas.
Cheers.

road classifieds.
looking to pick up a new frame / possible new (to me) bike.
any good road classifieds you guys have used?
quite a few options on ebay, just looking for more.
looked on cycling bc but not too much on there either
excellent typo
Tire selection
I want a good all around tire. Really. No joke. Dont laugh.
The tires will go on my "road trip" bike, so I cant really narrow down the type of terrain they will be used on. I really do need some "all around" tires. Although, it would probably be a safe bet to assume that most of the riding will be in dry conditions.
I need tubeless compatibility (Using DT swiss 5.1d rims with dt/eclipse tubeless conversion)
I need them to be tough. I dont want to cut my tire in the middle of a road trip with no bike shop in sight.
I need to be able to do some XC comfortably. Is under 850 grams too much to ask for? I'll do whatever it takes, but XC will always be on the menu so I dont want complete boat anchors.
I am looking at tires between 2.2 and 2.5. Thats a pretty big range, but I dont want to narrow down my choices TOO much.
I have used 2.5 UST Minions with great success on shuttle trails and lift access trails but they are way too much tire for any amount of XC. I recently used some fast track 2.2's for a trip to Arkansas for some epic trail riding and they were awesome performers for that type of riding but when we found a trail to shuttle, I cut the rear tire on the second run. I cut the front tire on the fourth run. Lots of loose rocks hidden under leaves (Earthquake Ridge Trail).
I need a tire that fits between the two. Bigger and beefier than the fast tracks, but lighter and faster rolling than the Minions.
Suggestions? So many choices!
Sunshine Village
I'm going to ski at Sunshine tomorrow. Never been there before. What's good?

2005 boxxer team opinions
hey, i know this is dredging up some history but searching "2005 boxxer" in the forums comes up with 2 threads. googling it reveals that people think the 2006+ is better because of the addition of motion control. is it that big a deal?
what do you guys think of 2005 boxxer teams?
Wanted: mech, chain and some bolts and washers
Right,
I need a SRAM mech (x5 or x7)
a chain - 9 speed - doesnt neccesarily need to be new
and 2 bolts and sets of cone washers for avid brake mounts.
I am on a low budget so the cheaper the better..
Must be willing to post or be based in whistler..
