Description:

Life on the Big Empty ain't easy

Contents:

Another reason I stay out of the mountains….

Yard Work

According to my neighbor the ‘wahr’ (wire)  on the fence is probably over 100 years old.  I believe him.  The barbs are weathered to a dullness.

A good place to live…

We have had snow for the past few days.  This morning I noticed a truck coming through my gate.  It was my ‘neighbor’ Lester.   He plowed my road for me.  I caught his attention and gave him a salute.  He waved back.  The next time we bake bread Les will definitely get a loaf.

The Big Empty diet….day 2

Breakfast was black coffee and dry toast.

Lunch was left over ham hocks and beans.  I finished off the cornbread.  Dessert was one Klondike ice cream bar.

Supper/Dinner was homemade Philly cheese steak subs.  Side dish was nachos. Dessrt was two Kl;ondike ice cream bars.

The new Big Empty diet

According to my doctor I should lose 10 lbs.  In my case it would mean going from 230 lbs to 220 lbs.  So I started the new Big Empty diet yesterday.

Breakfast:  Black coffee with dry toast

Lunch:  A walnut with three whole wheat crackers.

Supper:  Ham hocks, beans and homemade corn bread.  Dessert was two Klondike ice cream bars with double crunch chocolate coating.

I will periodically report on the success.

Another one of life’s mysteries

Yesterday the driver’s side window swithch died.  That window is no longer operable.  This is Colorado.  It is winter.   Yep…it is stuck open.

A coyote at the hose…

My friend Donn lives in a 5,000 acre cul-de-sac in New Mexico.  This is a photo of his nearest neighbor.  If you want to learn more about Donn click on ‘Sage Mesa’ on the side of the page marked  “links”.

I will tell you a story…

I pass by this barn on my way into Pueblo.  In the 1870’s, Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving estblished a new cattle trail from Texas to Wyoming.  The trail passed right by Pueblo.   This is Charles Goodnight’s barn as it looks today.   Establishing the trail was popularized on TV in the series  “Lonesome Dove” .  Tommy Lee Jones played Goodnight and Robert Duval played Loving.  In the series they were “Woodrow” and “Gus”.  Loving died of blood poisoning in Wyoming as a result of an arrow wound.  ‘Gus’ died of the same cause in the TV show.  My wife’s family’s oral history includes an item that her great-great grandfather….Juan Quintana…worked as a cook for Charles Goodnight  at his ranch “on the Arkansas by the bluffs”.  That is where she took the picture…”on the Arkansas by the bluffs”.

I was eavesdropping yesterday…

…in a checkout line at a store.  The couple in front of me were talking.  He said ‘you told me that I had to quit drinking beer because we can’t afford it.  You have over $50.00 worth of cosmetics there…what’s that all about?’  She said, ‘the cosmetics are for me to look pretty for you.’  he said, ‘that’s what the beer does’.    WOW !!!!  I put my stuff down and left the store.

Big news out here….

The Shell station on the highway got new gas pumps put in.  I drove over to look at them.  They are yellow and white…bright and shiny too!
