Three minor league players added to Phillies’ 40-man roster
Outfielder Quintin Berry, lefthander Yohan Flande and righthander Jesus Sanchez had their contracts selected to the Philadelphia Phillies’ 40-man roster, the club announced today.
Berry, who turns 25 on Saturday, spent this past season with Double-A Reading. He hit .266 with five home runs, 28 RBIs and 48 stolen bases in 135 games and played exclusively in center field. A fifth-round selection in the 2006 draft, Berry has 173 stolen bases in four minor league seasons.
Flande, 23, split the season between Single-A Clearwater and Reading. In a combined 25 starts, he went 10-5 with a 3.40 ERA and allowed six home runs in 145.2 innings. Flande, a native of the Dominican Republic, was originally signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 2004.

Westbrook’s concussion is cause for concern
The chilling news came down not long after Donovan McNabb took aim at rookie running back LeSean McCoy and fired incomplete on third down from the San Diego 7-yard line for the Eagles’ third straight red-zone failure.
Everyone in the press box was wondering where Brian Westbrook was on that play.
The answer came when an announcement was made that he had been removed from the eventual 31-23 loss to the Chargers because of a concussion.
Because this was his first game back since being knocked unconscious in a win at Washington on Oct. 26, it set off alarms everywhere.
Afterward, coach Andy Reid was asked if this latest setback was career-threatening for Westbrook.

Villanova recruit’s age in question
The good feelings surrounding Villanova as the Wildcats prepare to open their season took a hit yesterday after a report that suggests freshman center Mouphtaou Yarou may be six years older than the age of 19 listed on the university’s basketball Web site.
The report in Sporting News Today cited an item on the Web site for FIBA – the international governing body for basketball – that listed “Mouphtaou Monra Yarou” on the roster for Renaissance BBC in the 2007 FIBA Africa Cup, listing his age as 23 and his hometown as Matitingou.
If that Yarou really is Villanova’s highly regarded 6-foot-10 freshman center, that would make his age 25, and could exhaust most or all of his eligibility for the Wildcats.
The Villanova basketball Web site listed Yarou’s age as 19 – born June 26, 1990 – and his hometown as Natitingou, starting with an N and not an M, in Benin, West Africa.

Will OSU, Penn State defenses live up to the hype?
The conventional wisdom says that Ohio State’s football game against Penn State on Saturday will be a battle of defenses.
So, are the people saying that insightful observers or just masters of the obvious? Even the players involved aren’t sure.
The evidence is pretty strong in favor of a game dominated by defense.
Penn State ranks No. 1 in the country in scoring defense at 9.3 points a game and Ohio State is No. 6 at 11.7 The Nittany Lions are fifth nationally in total defense and OSU is sixth.
Last year, Penn State won 13-6 in Columbus in a game where field goals outnumbered touchdowns four to one.
“It could be a defensive struggle but you never know how a game is going to turn out,” Ohio State linebacker Ross Homan said earlier this week. “You always want the goose egg, zero points. But whatever happens, we have to outplay the other team’s defense.”
