Rambling Rows Afghan Baby Blanket
Just wanted to share pictures of Danielle's wonderful knitting work.  She made awesome baby blankets for the 3 new babies born in the family in the last year; Caroline, Alex and Carter, her baby cousins.  She used the Rambling Rows Afghan pattern from Cottage Creations purchased at our favorite yarn store The Knitting Sisters here in Williamsburg, Virginia.  You can also find many variations of the pattern on Ravelry.  We think she did a great job.

Snow in Williamsburg, Virginia - and it's still coming down!
It's a rare event in Williamsburg, Virginia for it to snow and our dogs seemed perplexed and excited - sorta.  One of our doggies, Sydney, the Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix loves the snow - and our other little doggie, Rachel, the Jack Russell, would rather it be sunny and 85 degrees.   The snow started last night and is expecting to continue through the day (1/30/10) till the wee hours of Sunday morn.  Predicted amounts of snow here are in the range of 4 to 12 inches.  We'll see.

Our Favorite C. S. Lewis Quotes to Ponder #2

"Nothing is yet in its true form."
— C.S. Lewis

"We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade the presence of God. The world is crowded with Him. He walks everywhere incognito."
— C.S. Lewis

"The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is."
— C.S. Lewis

"The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing — to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all the beauty came from — my country, the place where I ought to have been born. Do you think it all meant nothing, all the longing? The longing for home? For indeed it now feels not like going, but like going back."
— C.S. Lewis (Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold)

"[To have Faith in Christ] means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already. Not hoping to get to Heaven as a reward for your actions, but inevitably wanting to act in a certain way because a first faint gleam of Heaven is already inside you."
— C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

"A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading."
— C.S. Lewis

"[God] will not be used as a convenience. Men or nations who think they can revive the Faith in order to make a good society might just as well think they can use the stairs of heaven as a shortcut to the nearest chemist's shop."
— C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear."
— C.S. Lewis

"Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,...Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape."
— C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"Nothing you have not given away will ever really be yours."
— C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

"I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now...Come further up, come further in!"
— C.S. Lewis (The Last Battle)

"Crying is all right in its own way while it lasts. But you have to stop sooner or later, and then you still have to decide what to do."
— C.S. Lewis

"The stamp of the Saint is that he can waive his own rights and obey the Lord Jesus."
— C.S. Lewis

"Numbers don't win a battle."
— C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia)

"Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker."
— C.S. Lewis

"What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step."
— C.S. Lewis

"Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger; well there is such a thing as food; a duckling wants to swim; well there is such a thing as water, etc. If I find myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."
— C.S. Lewis

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for a bird to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."
— C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

"When we lose one blessing, another is often most unexpectedly given in its place."
— C.S. Lewis

"All that we call human history--money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery--[is] the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy." -"
— C.S. Lewis

"...here are beauties which pierce like swords or burn like cold iron. Here is a book which will break your heart." [on Lord of the Rings]"
— C.S. Lewis

"Miracles do not, in fact, break the laws of nature."
— C.S. Lewis (Miracles)

"I think each village was meant to feel pity for its own sick and poor whom it can help and I doubt if it is the duty of any private person to fix his mind on ills which he cannot help. This may even become an escape from the works of charity we really can do to those we know. God may call any one of us to respond to some far away problem or support those who have been so called. But we are finite and he will not call us everywhere or to support every worthy cause. And real needs are not far from us."
— C.S. Lewis

"Peter did not feel very brave; indeed, he felt he was going to be sick. But that made no difference to what he had to do."
— C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia)

"I gave in, and admitted that God was God."
— C.S. Lewis

"Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth thrown in. Aim at Earth and you get neither."
— C.S. Lewis

"If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage. I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country, which I shall not find till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside; I must make it the main object of life to press on to that other country and to help others to do the same."
— C.S. Lewis (The Timeless Writings of C.S. Lewis: The Pilgrim's Regress, Christian Reflections, & God in the Dock (Inspirational Christian Library) Hardcover Book)

"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscious, but shouts in our pain. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."
— C.S. Lewis

"Safe?" said Mr. Beaver."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."
— C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia)

"'This is the land of Narnia,' said the Faun, 'where we are now; all that lies between the lamp-post and the great castle of Cair Paravel on the eastern sea.'"
— C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia)

"There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him."
— C.S. Lewis (The Great Divorce)

"The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go God s love for us does not."
— C.S. Lewis

"God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing."
— C.S. Lewis

"This moment contains all moments."
— C.S. Lewis

"As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you."
— C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

"[Repentance] means unlearning all the self-conceit and self -will that we have been training ourselves into... It means killing part of yourself, under-going a kind of death."
— C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

"I was not born to be free---I was born to adore and obey."
— C.S. Lewis

"Whatever you do, He will make good of it. But not the good He had prepared for you if you had obeyed him."
— C.S. Lewis (Perelandra)

"Q. What is your view of the daily discipline of the Christian life - the need for taking time to be alone with God?
Lewis: "We have our New Testament regimental orders upon the subject. I would take it for granted that everyone who becomes a Christian would undertake this practice. It is enjoined upon us by Our Lord; and since they are his commands, I believe in following them. It is always just possible that Jesus Christ meant what he said when He told us to seek the secret place and to close the door."
— C.S. Lewis

"Hope is one of the Theological virtues. This means that a continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. It does not mean that we are to leave the present world as it is. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next."
— C.S. Lewis

"If you are really a product of a materialistic universe, how is it that you don't feel at home there?"
— C.S. Lewis

Experience: that most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God do you learn."
— C.S. Lewis

"Joy is the serious business of heaven."
— C.S. Lewis

"You don't have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body."
— C.S. Lewis

"I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."
— C.S. Lewis

"You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me."
— C.S. Lewis

"(The Christian) does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us."
— C.S. Lewis

"The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only - and that is to support the ultimate career. "
— C.S. Lewis
