Description:

The Malia and Sasha Fan Club weblog was created by my granddaughters (Kailysia and Kaila) who wanted to find more information about President Obama’s daughters. They could not find a website that had information on Malia and Sasha exclusively. My granddaughters ran away with my idea of starting their own kid-based website. Malia and Sasha are role models for a generation of children. We hope you enjoy!

First White House Halloween for Malia and Sasha
WASHINGTON (CNN)– The Obama family celebrated their first Halloween at the White House by inviting Washington area students and military families to trick or treat.

According to the White House, up to 2,000 kids between the ages of 6 and 14 years old are expected on the grounds of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Saturday evening.

Three 1,000 lb pumpkins shipped in from Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin were on display, while children were entertained by Star Wars characters, snow globe fairies, bubble makers, and wandering trees.

The National Parks Foundation provided sweets for the children.

Malia and Sasha received vaccine for H1N1 Flu
Associated Press

First Lady Michelle Obama's office said Tuesday that Malia and Sasha Obama have received the vaccine for the H1N1 flu, otherwise known as swine flu.

A spokeswoman for Michelle Obama, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, tells the Associated Press that Sasha, age 8, and Malia, age 11, got the shot from a White House doctor last week after it became available to schoolchildren in the Washington area.

President and Michelle Obama are going to wait to get the H1N1 shot until members of higher priority groups have received their shots. The whole family, however, has gotten the seasonal flu shot.

Malia and Sasha's Mom Hits 142 at Hula Hoops

Mrs. Obama managed 142 swivels of a hula hoop yesterday during a "healthy kids fair" on the White House lawn. Jumping rope double dutch? Not so much. The first lady also gave a pep talk about eating right to about 100 children and parents from local elementary schools. Obama said it's OK to eat fun stuff sometimes as long as you usually eat right.

"Look, my favorite food in the whole wide world are french fries," she said. "I love them. Dearly. Deeply. I have a good relationship with french fries and I would eat them every single day if I could. I tell my girls this: If you're getting the right foods for most of the time, then when it's time to have cake and french fries on those special occasions, then you balance it out."

Question:
Can you hoola hoop?

Malia and Sasha's Dad keeps tab of what they are reading
President Obama keeps tab of what Sasha and Malia are reading, according to a report by pool reporter George Condon of Congress Daily about the president's visit to a Maryland elementary school yesterday.

Here's an excerpt:

He asked each kid what he or she was reading. One kid said "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." The president said, "Sasha and Malia loved that. They think it is hilarious."

In addition, the president told students at Viers Mill Elementary School that he had read the Harry Potter books with Malia and thought they were "pretty good."

Question: What are you reading?

The President is a fan of Where the Wild Things Are
Mstwixt.com

It's no surprise that our President is a voracious reader, but did you know that he counts Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are among his faves? The Father-in-Chief read the book during the White House Easter Egg Roll earlier this year, and at today's visit to Viers Mill Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD, he shared that he saw the movie yesterday and loved it.

The DC premiere of the Where the Wild Things Are movie was last week.

QUESTION:
What does voracious mean? Don't forget to use the dictionary on the side bar.

Report from the Tween Summit
Examiner.com Nashville
October 13, 2:03 AMDC Tweens ExaminerMs Twixt

Excerpts from Ms twixt:

The Tween Summit took place this past Saturday at the Capital Hilton hotel in Washington. The day was all about tween girls: what tweens want, their dreams, and what they want to see from the government, parents, schools, and society. While the majority of girls in attendance were from the Washington area, I met families who had travelled from Florida, Washington state, and California.

Jess Weiner moderated the day's sessions. On the topic of the First Tweens, she says that girls are "so excited to have tweens as role models in the White House" not just because their father is the President, but because they are so relatable. Malia and Sasha Obama live lives so much like other tweens - they attend school, play soccer, care for their pets, take vacations with their parents, cheer for the Jonas Brothers - just like other tweens. Jess also heard from girls at the Summit that they want to see "more real girls" in the media, and that they "want to be featured and acknowledged for their own efforts" (many of the girls attending the Summit are active in their communities and emerging leaders).

AllyKatzz.com organized the Summit, and they will be publishing the input from the girls' sessions shortly. Girls spent the morning and afternoon sharing their insights on all kinds of issues and contributed their comments on "the White House Wall".

Congratulations to Malia and Sasha's dad for winning the Nobel Peace Prize!
I told my granddaughters that President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. They were very excited and then asked the question: What is a Nobel Peace Prize? I immediately went into my teaching research mode and gave them an activity so they could come back and tell me the answer.

(1) They had to click Mr. Nobel's photo to read how this all started.

(2) Answer the question: Where does the money for the Nobel Prizes come from?

(3) Watch the 3 minute video.

(4) Play the games.

You don't have to be a genius to understand the work of the Nobel Laureates. These games and simulations, based on Nobel Prize-awarded achievements, will teach and inspire you while you're having FUN!
