Fast Electric RC Cars - How to optimum motor performance
Running your electric RC Car while your motor overheated could weaken motor spring, magnet and could burning your motor brushes. It also reducing your car operating time and may result you will be stop at the half way of the race. To avoid this happen, there are three methods to prevent your motor from overheated during it operate at high speed.
1.Proper gear ratio (pinion and spur).
2.Proper gap between pinion and spur.
3.Proper maintenance.

Basic guide.
1.Use proper gear ratio.
The best way to reduce or minimize your motor from heat is by using difference gear ratio for each circuit lay out. Although you had made a proper gear ratio setting for one circuit, it’s not meant that this setting is suitable for other circuit. To do this you are advised to follow gear ratio setting recommended by your electric RC Car manufacturer and by your own experiment.

Experiment Tips.
-Make an experiment to as many combination of your pinion and spur (ratio).
-Check and write down your result on all of your experiment until you get a suitable combination of your pinion and spur.
a) Acceleration during starting.
b) Maximum speed
c) Your laps time.
d) How your car acceleration after taking corner.
-Make an experiment with difference pinion first then by spur since replace pinion is easier than replace spur. At first you are advise to start your experiment of your electric RC Car with standard gear ratio recommended by RC Car manufacturer.
-Run your RC Car as you were racing and make sure your driving style and your electric RC Car run time is same when doing experiment.
-Stop and check your motor temperature by thermometer on every single ratio experiment. Don’t ever use your finger tip or drop of water to measure your motor temperature, it won’t give you exact result.

Setting Tips.
-If your motor temperature is too high, you should replace with a lower number of teeth of pinion.
-If your motor still cool, you should try to run with a higher number of teeth of pinion.
-During your experiment to find the best gear ratio, you should target to optimum performance.
-Less number of teeth of pinion will increase acceleration torque but less in top speed.
-More number of teeth pinion will increase top speed but less in acceleration torque.

2.Proper gap setting between pinion and spur.
Proper combination of your pinion and spur won’t benefit you if you are not concerned on your pinion and spur gap setting. This is one of important things
to consider to ensure your RC Car motor serve you at optimum performance.
Toward to this make sure your gap setting is not to close ( tight ), as it will cause your motor temperature increase faster and if your setting is too big it will cause your spur wear off faster.

Setting tips.
-Easy way to make an adjustment is by using a sheet of paper (A4 -60gm~70gm of thickness).
-Loose your motor mounting screw, put the paper in between of pinion and spur, turn your pinion until the paper fit between pinion and spur.
-Tighten the motor mounting screw.

3.Proper maintenance.
In order to make sure your RC Car motor continuously serve you better, you are advise to do periodical cleaning and lubricant on your rc motor. Use only “Cleaner and lubricant” recommended by RC Car manufacturer.

Fast electric rc car – Rc car tournament or race tips
After you have enough experience competing with many other electric rc car and familiar on driving on circuit, now is the time for you to go further to the next level of electric rc car driving skill. This is because most of electric rc car community always assume that every electric rc car driver who has enter any electric rc car tournament or race is classified into skilled driver group.
Participate in fast electric rc car tournament or competition is very exciting, succeed in the race or tournament you entered is one thing, another thing is you can feel that difference between competing with your friend and competing with your true rivals. From this valuable experience you can learn and improve your driving skill and your electric rc car set to suit the track lay out and surface.
In every electric rc car race, number of participant usually comprise from 10 or more electric rc car racer in a time. As in previous article, If you want familiar with race environment, most effective way is by practice a training with a group of your friend. It’s very important for you to familiar with electric rc car race environment, this is because in actual electric rc car race, the circuit will become narrow because there are many others electric rc car on the and this will let you in difficulty during driving. Experience as such immensely helpful you when you are in actual electric rc car race.

Below are few tips to guide you to enter a tournament.
Race categories.
There are various categories of electric rc car tournament such as:
a) On-road racing.
b) Off-road racing
c) Drag racing.
d) Endurance racing.

Race qualified
Normally racer needed to go through 2 or 3 pre race ( heat ) as for qualification to enter final electric rc car race. Best lap for each racer will be count to determine which group and number of position where to start during final race. For example the best lap driver ( top qualify )will be in group “A” and position no.1, the best 2 until 10 driver also will start in group “A” and position 2 to 10 depend on their best lap, the best 11 until 20 driver will start in group “B”. This such format will count to determine until last qualified driver. For example group “C”,”D” depend on race orginizer.

Starting line until first corner of race.
In the electric rc car race, the result always depend on how you start at starting point until first corner, however fast or good starting wouldn’t give an advantage to you to win the race. Most probability an accidents will occurred during this stage, because all of electric rc cars move very close to each other to lead other rivals. If this to happen you, it will reducing your opportunity to lead your competitor. You are advised very careful at stage.

Dominate inside line of corner.
Trying to dominate a corner because every electric rc car race having many corner route compared straight road. Any racer which possess high efficiency at the corner will have an advantages to win the race.

Fast electric rc cars – Cornering technique 2
Practice as you were racing.
Electric rc car race is competing with many other electric rc cars at the same time in one circuit. If you want to become fammiliar with electric rc car racing, the best way to achive that is by doing practice from time to time with a group of your friend. It is important for you to experience a difference between driving your electric rc car alone and driving with your rivals. You'll notice the track crowded with all the electric rc car on the line you desire. Experience is what counts to get your car ahead of the others.
The result of the rc race sometime depends on your starting time. However, a quick start is not always advantages. Accidents are almost to happen between the start and the first corner because participating cars are running close to one another. Decide how you should start according to characteristics of your car and the track layout.
Always keep on the inside line of track
When competing with your rivals during cornering, take the inside line of the track to ensure you have advantage to lead. It is very difficult for you to beat your rivals in the corner by trying to overtake him on the outside because most of electric rc cars are running at about same speed. If your rc car can manage a higher speed than the others, only then, it may possible. Trying to take the inside line too early can cause to over running the corner can resulting loss of time and opening a space for another rc cars. If this happen you’re at the edge of the track, your rival can easily overtake you on the inside. In order to avoid this, keep on the inside line of track, Trying to force the others to delay their rc car acceleration. Taking and holding the inside line in the corner is a golden rule for taking the lead at corners. Confrontation between electric rc cars during cornering is the most exiting moment in the electric rc car race, but be sure to avoid the selfish type of driving that can cause accident and damage your and others electric rc car that will spoil the race for everyone.
Overtake the others rc car
There are various places in which you can try to overtake another rc car. In a straight is the safest place to do so. It is dangerous to overtake the car when you are following too close behind it. When you are decide that it is possible to overtake, steer your car a little as soon as possible and attempt to past it. You may overtake on either side, wherever there is more room. If the space on each side is about the same, it is advisable to go inside to make next corner negotiable. Overtaking on the corner is very dangerous compares with passing on the straight. If the driver of the car you are trying to overtake is not skilful or less experience in the race, your electric rc car may involved in an accident. To ensure to overtake the other rc car easier. It is advisable to go on inside of the rival’s electric rc car and overtaking it after turning the corner. It is very difficult to pass it on the outside of the corner event if your car is much faster. If your car has hit another rc car and it will cause your rc car lost in control, you are advised to reduce the throttle. If you try to control by steering, the car might be further disturbed. Start accelerating again only after the car has slowing down and stable.

Fast electric rc car –Cornering technique Part 1
After you have good knowledge in previous tips, and know is time for you to become a good or skill driver. In this article you will know the basic driving tips.

In Rc car’s world anyone will not become a skill driver if you just running on an open surface. You are advice to practice on a circuit, because running your electric rc car on a circuit or track is totally difference compare to running your electric rc car on an open surface or running just straight, and only practicing or driving on a circuit will improve your driving skill. At curves your skill of taking corners affect the result even among electric rc cars of same performance. Especially in speed electric rc car races, the cornering technique is one of the decisive factors to your race result. After becoming accustomed with your electric rc car, try to practice smooth, speedy and stable cornering.
Slow-in and Fast-out cornering.
Decelerating when entering into a curve and picking up the speed after your electric rc car reach to center of curve is the technique. In this case of entering curves without reducing speed, your car is force to slow down before finishing corners to lose speed and stability. In the worst cases, your electric rc car might spin or run off the track. It also gets your electric rc car moving too late to pick up speed. Slow-in and fast-out is important rule in controlling speed in curve. Briefly you should control speed in “slow-in and fast-out manner. As a result “slow-in and fast-out” is the fastest way to take corners.
Out-in-out cornering.
As in illustrated, a way of taking corner from outside line of a track into inside line to which your electric rc car come closer to the center of the corner ( clipping point ) and finishing the corner back to the outside line, try to making the longest possible the turning radius. By using the full width of the track, your electric rc car will make an easier turn than the actual corner. This will allow your electric rc car to run through the turns faster.
In some cases, it’s may be better to set the clipping point a slightly after the center of the corner, because it enable your electric rc car accelerate early.

Fast electric rc cars - Shock absorber system
Shock absorbers are another important or critical component on your fast electric rc car that allows wheels to move up and down freely to absorb bumps, jump landings, and other sudden force. Real shock absorber has a piston attached to shock shaft which protrude from a sealed shock body filled with silicone oil. The oil resists the movement of the piston and absorbs the force. Difference thicknesses of oil (wt) are available to suit the stiffness of the shocks.
It can be very complicated as where to start if you are trying to improve your handling skill. Before you made an adjustment or tuning your electric rc cars shock absorber, you have to consider a few things that may effect your handling on your electric rc car.
- Driving style.
- Track surface condition.
- Tire compound.
- Shaft or belt driven.
- Electric rc car setting.
- Understand your shock absorber system.
There are a few important components in shock absorber structure:
Shock Body.
Main component of shock absorber system is shock body. There are two type of shock body in the market.
- Viscous damper- Operated with silicone oil and piston to absorb force.
- Coulomb damper- Operated with out oil.
Piston
Most of the electric rc car which is using silicone oil in their shock absorber system, adjustment of shock absorber stiffness will be easier by using difference thickness of silicone oil and by using difference piston (difference number of hole on piston).
- Thicker the thicknesses of silicon oil will harder your rc car shock absorber.
- Lesser the number of holes on your piston will herder your rc car shock absorber.
Spring.
Main purpose of shock absorber spring is to control the level of suspension movement. A hard spring will cause your electric rc car striking downward less compared to a soft spring. Generally a level of soft or hard spring is called spring rate or stiffness and measure in unit lb/ Inch or Newton / meter. You don’t have to worry how to measure it, because it can be identified by color code such as green, yellow or red color.
Here are a few more tips to help you.
- Less downstop will make your electric rc car more responsive and better on bumpy track, but it will cause less stable.
- Lowering the ride height gives you more grip.
- Increasing front track-width will result in more understeer, while
decreasing it will result in less understeer and faster steering
response.
After you know and understand your electric rc car shock absorber system, know is your time to tuning your shock absorber base on above know-how.

Fast electric rc cars – All about RC battery tips
After we know about RC batteries and now we need to know tips about how to choose, charging and take care of RC batteries. These tips is actually recommended and implemented by most of advance or professional fast electric rc car community and rc car accessories manufacturer. These tips also will help you to maximize your battery performance and battery long life.
Make a purchase a rc battery.
- Before make a purchase please ask for advised or recommendation from senior or advance fast electric rc car community.
- Always purchase a rc battery from rc cars shop or hobby shop, don’t ever buying from others sources or maker or manufacturer that we never heard.
- Make a purchase base on own budget and your performance requirement.
- Purchase more than one battery or at least two set ( alternate used during charging and play )
- If purchase more than one battery please select from difference manufacturer and make a comparison which one is suit or better performance to you or your fast electric rc car. ( if you plan to make a comparison by your self )
Batteries charge rate and discharge:
When you purchase the battery, follow charging instruction recommended by manufacturer. Normally it will take long period at first charge. For discharge or drained your batteries, NiCad batteries should be discharge after each cycle of usage to maintain it performance and battery long life, it much difference compare to NiMH batteries, you don’t need to do as NiCad batteries. Don’t forget to let your batteries break for 2 to 3 minutes to cool down before starting to discharge.
NiMH .
Many advance or professional racer recommended that 5 to 6 amps are most
suitable for 3300 batteries and for 3000 batteries at 4 to 5 amps.
NiCad
Best charging rate for this type of batteries is 4 to 5 amps.
( Base on 2400 batteries )
Batteries storage:
NiMH
If the battery pack will not used for a long period, it is better to charge the battery for one minute before storing.
NiCad
Put 30% of charge back into your batteries and run it at lease once a week if you store it for a long period.
Others:
- Higher amps charging will result in more acceleration, but total running time short. For the longest running time and battery long life, charge at lower rate.
- Use cooling fan to reduce heat during charging.
- Always take out batteries from your car and store into special box to avoid short circuit between them.

Fast electric rc cars – To know about RC Battery
When we talk about fast electric rc car speed, one of thing in our mind is battery. Battery is one of important part of fast electric rc car. It function is to generate a power to fast electric rc car, without that the fast electric rc car won’t be run. Battery also is one of the part which ensure how fast and how long your rc car can run especially to someone who have plan to enter in rc car race or competition.
You can find a few type of battery in the market today, and of course it will make us confuse to choose which are the best to be used for your fast electric rc car.
There are two type of battery which is commonly use by fast electric rc car community today :
1) Nickel Cadmium ( Ni-Cd )
2) Nickel Metal Hydride ( Ni-Mh )

Nickel Cadmium Batteries.( Ni-Cd )
This type of battery had already been used since long time ago. You can choose from a various capacity such as 1400mAh, 1500mAh, 1700mAh, 2000mAh, 2400mAh and 3000mAh. In term of cost, this type of battery is cheaper and lowers capacity in the market. The most popular capacity which commonly used are 1500mAh and 2400mAh, this is because this range of capacity are easily to get.
Battery 1500mAh is sold in one pack ( standard packing ), it contain 6 pcs battery which had already soldered and packed in plastic, it’s has become a easiest battery to used, maintained and stored. This battery is the best choice and suitable for beginner who are used stock motor for their electric rc car and remember, this battery is not suitable to used at fast electric rc cars which is assemble with modified motor.
Battery 2400mAh is more expensive compared to battery 1500mAh, and it’s comes or sole separately (piece by piece) and need to solder with battery bars. Advantage of this battery are, it has ability to generate your fast electric rc car run faster and longer running time than battery pack with 1500mAh capacity.

Nickel Metal Hydride batteries ( Ni-Mh )
This is the battery which was created with latest technology and was created since 1999 and compliant to environment expect. This battery can easily recycle compared to nickel cadmium which is difficult to recycle.
In term of performance this type of battery can perform much better than nickel cadmium. Minimum capacity for this type of battery available in the market is 3000mAh but you can find a higher capacity today and it’s become the most popular because it has ability to generate faster in speed and longer run time compared to nickel cadmium.
This type of battery are specially created and build for advance or professional rc community and suitable for fast electric rc cars, therefore it’s normally comes or sole separately in the market and need to soldered. In term of price, of course it’s expensive.

Fast electric rc cars – Electronic speed controller ( ESC )
Every of fast electric rc car which power by electric ( EP ) require an electronic speed controller ( ESC ), purpose of this equipment are to control electric current from battery to motor and low or high speed of your fast electric rc car. With an efficient of it control system ESC also able:
-To avoid circuit from burn.
-To control or avoid leak current during transfer from battery to motor.
-To stabilize current during speeding.
-To use with faster ( high rpm ) motor.
(Turn-The lower a number of turn, the faster a rpm of each motor)
Ability of each ESC are measure from it ampere and level of voltage of each ESC can received. Each of ESC able to absorb current from 4 to 8 volt and it depend on number of ampere and measure in unit ohm.
ESC are build with it own function such as set-up and mode. This is to ensure desired speed level of each your fast electric rc car. You don’t have to worry about setting of your ESC because most of ESC will provided with set up work guide or software in the package to guide you. Normally this package can be found in expensive ESC unit like LRP, GM, Novak, Nosram and many more.
Beside that most of ESC also comes with ‘heatsink’. Heatsink work as a cooler to your ESC and ensure that your ESC work with normal temperature. Extremely temperature will give a negative impact and effect to your ESC performance. Temperature of your ESC normally will increase when your fast electric rc car run at low speed. The phenomena may relate to gear ratio you had chose, therefore you have to careful to choose a suit gear ratio for your fast electric rc car.
If you have plan to buy a ESC, you are advised to ask someone who have good experience in this field or ask for recommendation from you nearby hobby shop.
This are important to avoid a wrong choice and waste your money.
