Transition to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server now easy for users of RHEL and CentOS
by Scott Morris. Filed under SUSE News, novell
“The new program is in response to growing customer demand for help as they make the strategic decision to transition their data center Linux infrastructure from existing third-party distributions, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS, to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Many times, customers who want to move between platforms are constrained by factors such as IT resource limitations, application migration scheduling and training costs, which means they need time to make an orderly transition. In response to these challenges, Novell is providing technical support for a customer’s existing Linux environment and is also delivering training and tools to ensure the transition to the SUSE Linux Enterprise platform is smooth and successful.”

Unable to invoke program and Lotus Notes
Question:
After a Lotus Notes® Client-only single user install, the administrator notices that the ntmulti.exe task (Multi-User Cleanup Service) is running in Task Manager. This service should be installed only on multi-user systems, not on single-user installations. What does this mean?
Cause:
Although the Multi-User Cleanup utility was designed for roaming users on multi-user installs, the ntmulti.exe task still installs and runs on Notes Client-only single user installs. The ntmulti.exe task is not provided with an "all client install" as with Lotus Domino® Designer and Domino Administrator clients.
This issue occurs when a single Notes client install is running the Multi-user Cleanup Service. This service, ntmulti.exe, should be installed only on Multi-user systems, not on single-user installations.
On Notes client Single-User installs, check the system Services under Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, for Multi-user Cleanup Service. If this service is started, stop it, and change the Startup Type from Automatic to Manual.
Supporting Information:
In one case, the service ntmulti.exe was not present in the Services, and was not running as a process in Task Manager, even though the user observed the same symptoms. Re-running client setup to generate a new names.nsf, desktop6.ndk, and bookmark.nsf resolved the issue.

What's Holding Cloud Computing Back?
The two things (in my opinion) holding back cloud computing from truly taking off in the enterprise are security and compliance. With an abstract concept like cloud computing, telling your security department that you are moving the company’s sensitive data and mission-critical processing to a “cloud” might get some laughs.
Exactly where is the data physically located? Are there other companies using the same equipment? Who has access to these systems?
How is data transferred to and from the cloud? What operating systems run the cloud? What if the cloud provider goes out of business?
Gartner also released a series of research papers on cloud computing in June, comparing cloud-computing delivery methods to the Industrial Revolution because of their potential to change the way IT services are delivered and acquired.
"Cloud computing has become the latest in a series of popular industry terms and, as such, is used in many contradictory ways," Gartner said in a report titled "Key Issues for Cloud Computing." "Underneath the fog, there are trends -- such as global-class architecture, Web platforms, massively scalable processing and the Internet -- that are converging to fuel the cloud-computing phenomenon. The platform angle, in particular, will enable composite applications and composite businesses, and has the potential to have a profound impact on IT and business. Organizations must evolve to deal with the changes, and understand what hype is safe to ignore."

Synology Inc. Disk Station Manager 2.0 September Firmware Upgrade
Synology Inc. closed its September Beta program and officially released the Disk Station Manager 2.0 September firmware upgrade. Resuming earlier success and absorbing user feedbacks, the Disk Station Manager 2.0 September upgrade highlights a wide range of newly added business features, including RAID 6 volume type, built-in NFS, Link Aggregation, Package Management, Virtual Host, as well as an extensive scope of function enhancements covering Download Station 2, File Station, Audio Station, Photo Station, Surveillance Station, and many more.
"With over 4,000 participants attracted to our earlier Beta testing program, feeding us with numerous valuable comments and suggestions," says Edward Lin, marketing director of Synology, "Synology is now ready to end the Beta trial period and proud to present our users the most updated Disk Station Manager 2.0 firmware version."
Disk Station Manager 2.0 September upgrade took all users' advice into consideration, digested with detail evaluation, and has come up with a refreshed version.
Browsing through the new business features, RAID 6 volume type is now supported for advanced data protection elevating security level. In the meantime, apart from supporting S.M.A.R.T. function of the hard drives, the Disk Station Manager 2.0 also runs S.M.A.R.T. test which helps to monitor, detect, and report hard disk status on an automatic basis alerting possible hard drive failures and avoiding probable data loss.
Large amount of manual costs are saved by the September firmware upgrade. The built-in NFS can now be easily enabled on the management UI along with privileges setup, sparing all previous manual procedures. And creating large amount of new users will no longer be a time-consuming process by applying the Batch User function. Moreover, the newly introduced Package Management includes the Logitech SqueezeCenter as the first available package to offer Slim Devices users a convenient way to stream music from Synology NAS servers to their gadgets skipping complicated setup process.
The Virtual Host settings give users the ability to host up to 30 websites on one single server - an economical solution for small businesses and corporations. Moreover, the dual-port Link Aggregation offers users load sharing and failover supports to ensure a working environment free from interruption.
Enhancement wise, Local Backup can now perform multiple backup tasks with friendly Wizard guiding users along the way. Software Development Director of Synology Derren Lu comments, "the enhanced FTP server presents the advanced privileges of 'write-only' and limits the maximum connection from each IP. Furthermore, by supporting UTF-8, users will no longer face disordered coding issue and the language barrier is torn down." And a whole new Download Station 2 offers new channels like eMule and NZB while allowing partial file download from BitTorrent.
"With a huge step forward," continues Derren, "the Surveillance Station now fully supports MPEG-4 and megapixel IP cameras, includes the new alarm recording mode for external input triggering, and comes together with real-time basis mode to be watched on full screen. Amazingly, the list of IP camera models supported by our September Beta is almost 70."
Tired from work and want to lay back but cannot find USB speakers to play your stored data base music? Audio Station with its new web streaming capability makes it possible by streaming music to the client PC while watching photos is now enjoyed in a 3 dimensional way and the dazzling PicLens support is also available from the Photo Station 3.
To take a more detailed look at the Disk Station Manager 2.0 September firmware upgrade, please notice the following:
Extra Data Protection: RAID 6 volume type cuts off the risk of volume failure and doubles the protection (4 or more bay models).
Built-in NFS: No more trivial but inevitable manual process of setting up NFS is required. With built-in NFS option, users can set up privileges on the UI by a few checks only.
Link Aggregation: Provides share-loading and failover support for dual-LAN-port models.
Virtual Host: One single server to host multiple websites for a more efficient and economical purpose.
Batch Users: Helps to create user accounts on a batch basis.
HDD S.M.A.R.T.: Allows users to monitor, detect, and report the hard disks status to alert possible HDD failures.
Package Management & Logitech® SqueezeCenter Support: The Package Management along coming with Logitech SqueezeCenter offers Slim Devices users an easy way of streaming music to their gadgets.
Enhanced Surveillance Station: A new option of alarm-recording mode is added, the performance on motion-detection recording mode is improved along with MPEG-4 support. Snapshot taking is also available. In addition, almost 70 IP camera models are now found on the support list.
Enhanced Local Backup: Enables multiple scheduled Local Backup tasks with the assistance of Local Backup wizard.
Enhanced FTP Server: Presents the advanced privilege of "write-only", limits maximum connections from each individual IP, and supports UTF-8 language mode.
NEW Download Station 2: Supports two new download channels – eMule and NZB, and allows partial file download form BitTorrent.
Enhanced File Station: Users can now login on a separate page and customize the webpage banner in their own fashion.
Enhanced Audio Station: No USB speakers are required for playing music stored on the server anymore. The new streaming mode streams music to the client PC and delivers by built-in speakers.
Enhanced iTunes Server: Presents enhanced long playlist handling; WAV and AIF files are now supported for file streaming (metadata may not be indexed).
Enhanced Photo Station 3: Supports theme customization, FLV video files, Cooliris (formerly known as "PicLens") 3-dimensional browsing, and delivers embellished photo slideshow.

How to modify font and color properties of unread/read documents in Notes 8.0.x
In Lotus Notes® 8 releases, you notice that the mail files using the Notes 8 mail template display unread documents in black. Custom databases and mail files using the Notes 6 or 7 mail template display unread documents as specified in the "Rows Unread" setting of the View/Folder properties. The default is red for templates that ship with Notes/Lotus Domino®.
You want to change the color of read and unread documents in your mail file design. How can this be done?
Cause:
Notes 8 Standard Configuration contains a code file (notes.css) to determine the color of unread documents in a mail file based on the Notes 8 mail template. This code file does not read from the View/Folder Property Rows setting found on the Style tab.
Answer:
An enhancement request to add a user interface option to modify the font style and color of Notes 8 mail files was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# JSTN7EEJXL Notes 8.0 and 8.0.1
To change the color of read and unread documents, you must manually modify the notes.css file that stores these settings. You must also be sure that the Preferences Theme setting (File --> Preferences --> Windows and Themes --> Theme) is set to "Notes 8 Theme". Also, Notes should be exited before editing the file.
To locate the notes.css file, it's best to use the operating system search feature since the file location can vary depending on when and where Notes was installed. A typical location for this file is in a directory structure similar to the following:
C:ProgramfilesLotus
otesframeworksharedeclipsepluginscom.ibm.notes.branding_3.0.0.20070803-1143 hemes
