The Basics of Training a Dog

Did you recently bring home a new puppy? If so, you may be looking for information on how to train your dog. You can hire an obedience instructor to train your dog or you can do it yourself. Fees charged by obedience instructors vary greatly and you’ll also have to take the dog to dog school. If you decide to train your dog yourself, you can save a lot of money and you can do it at home. You can begin training your dog now but you need to know how to go about it. There are three basic commands that your dog must learn: sit, stay and come.

You should start with “sit”. You’ll need lots of treats to reward your dog when he learns to sit on command. Are you ready? Pick a quiet place for this training session as you don’t want your dog to easily get distracted. Say the “sit” command over and over again and hold a treat just above his head. To get the treat, he will have to turn his head up. He should sit to get the treat. If your dog isn’t sitting, delicately push his back down. Praise him when he sits and give him a treat. Repeat the word “sit” and repeat the whole process again. Reward him every time he sits when you use the command “sit”.

When your dog can sit on command, you need to teach him to “stay” and this one is a little harder but your dog should learn it before “come”. Start by getting your dog to sit somewhere. Slowly walk back while repeating the word “stay”. Maintain eye contact with your dog. When he stands, say “no” then repeat the “sit” command and slowly walk away while saying “stay”. You will need to be patient as it will take some time for your dog to get it. If you have someone else with you, you can ask this person to sit and hold your dog back to help your dog understand. Once he has learned to stay while you maintain eye contact. Teach him to stay while you walk away with your back towards the dog. Once again, this command is tricky and your dog will stand to follow you. Tell him “no” and repeat the whole process again.

After your dog learns to sit and stay on command, you can teach him to “come”. Start by getting him to sit and stay while you walk away. Then, say “come” in an enthusiastic voice and thump your knee at the same time. Repeat the command until he comes. When he does come, give him a treat and play with him a little.

You should always use lots of praise during training and avoid resorting to punishment. Dogs learn faster with positive reinforcement. Remember this easy tip for all your future training sessions and work hard to teach your dog to master these three basic training skills. By following the advice contained in this article, you will soon be the proud owner of an obedient dog.

All dog owners have to train their dog. It takes time and effort to properly train dogs. If you don’t spend enough time and effort in the beginning, your dog will develop behavioral problems that will be harder to fix. This is why you need to start training your dog as soon as possible. You can even mix and match techniques to create your own training technique that works. What is important is that your dog must get trained effectively. Here are a few alternatives for dog training:

You can let a professional train your dog for you. This option is particularly appealing to those who spend a lot of time away from home or don’t have the stamina or time required to train their own dog. A downside to this option is that it can be a little expensive. Ask around for a few rates before settling on a particular trainer.

Another option would be to use a training collar as an additional tool to train your dog. A few types of training collars exist. Some create a sound that is painful to the dog and others send a small electrical shock. Obviously, you would only send these signals if your dog is doing something wrong. These techniques can be useful if they are not abused and they are considered safe for dogs.

Obviously, you can also use your own training techniques. You can reward your dog when he follows your commands. If you feel overwhelmed with dog training, there is no shame is asking for help from others. It’s important to get your dog trained properly!

Use Dog Training To Turn Your Dog Into An Amazing Dog

Many people say that they have a horrible-mannered dog. The main reason why these dogs aren’t well behaved is that they were poorly trained by the owner. It’s not the dog’s fault if he doesn’t know what good manners are and if he doesn’t follow your commands… As a dog owner, you must be responsible and take care of your dog. This responsibility includes training your dog properly. There is a lot of information available on how to properly train dogs and you can find out what works and what doesn’t.

Once you start training your dog using the right training methods, your dog can also become a great dog. You’ll definitely enjoy spending more time with your dog once he’s better behaved and you’ll be proud of both your accomplishments and the dog’s accomplishments. You need to spend time and effort while training your dog and your dog too can become an amazing dog.

Your dog must learn to follow your commands and understand the various tones of your voice. Start with the basic commands: sit, stay and come. Once your dog masters these three commands, you can move on to more difficult ones. By spending more time with your dog and discovering what makes him tick, you will start seeing awesome results quite quickly. But it will require time, determination, patience and consistence from you. All dogs, from mutts to pure breeds are capable of becoming well-behaved canine companions.

During your training session, always use positive reinforcement and NEVER use physical violence. It doesn’t matter how irritated or frustrated you are, it is simply not acceptable to cause bodily harm to your pet. Instead, use a louder voice with the appropriate tone and your dog will understand. You need to catch him in the act as well if you want to reprimand him.

So start with the basic commands and use positive reinforcement. You and everyone around you will soon see an enormous difference in your dog’s behavior. Reward your dog whenever he follows your command and does something right or listens to you. You can give him a treat, pet him or play with him. Dogs love to be praised. Understanding the Differences Between Various Dog Training Courses

All dog owners must train their dog if they want him to behave well and respond to their commands. Training is the hard part. Enjoying the benefits of training is a pure pleasure. There are various options when it comes to dog training courses and not all of them are suitable for your particular dog. Dog training can accommodate varying development stages in dogs. Some dogs haven’t been trained at all while others have received various levels of training. This is why it’s important to compare the various dog training courses that are offered so that you can pick the right one for your dog. Here are your options:

Basic Dog Training Course. This is the most basic dog training course and it is aimed at beginners. The students can be puppies or grown-up dogs that haven’t been trained before. This course will teach rudimentary skills such as sitting, staying and coming when called. The course also includes teaching the dog to properly socialize with people and other dogs. The socialization aspect is particularly beneficial to puppies. This course is perfect for your dog if he has never been trained before.

Intermediate Dog Training Course. Once your dog has completed the basic course, he can move on to the intermediate course. This course is for adult dogs that have either taken the basic course or learned the same basic skills from their owners. This course teaches dogs how to heel, properly walk while on a leash, fetch objects and bring them back. The course also reviews the basic sit, stay and come commands.

Advanced Dog Training Course. Once your dog has completed the intermediate course, he can move on to the third and final type of dog training. This course reviews the content of the basic and intermediate dog training courses then teaches dogs how to come, stay, heel, fetch, lie down, and a few others while using hand signals. By learning these hand signals, the dog gets to learn how to walk and stay beside his owner without a leash. The course also teaches dogs to pay attention to their owner and to not be distracted. This level of training course is best suited for dogs who are already obedient and well-behaved.

Good dog training will include positive reinforcement like prizes and rewards. Hitting and yelling at your dog isn’t the best technique to use to train a dog. If you choose negative training techniques, you will likely fail. Stick to positive reinforcement techniques, pick the course that is most suitable for your dog and your dog will soon be very well behaved.

Dog Training Made Easy

Dog Training Made Easy

The number one reason why more dog owners do not get involved with training their dogs is because they perceive dog training as a tiresome, lengthy task. However, it can actually be a lot of fun, and so long as you understand that training your dog specific actions or behaviors will not happen overnight, it can become a fun pastime for both you and your pet.

You do not have to be a world-class dog trainer or spend money on expensive training classes. In fact, it is very possible that you could train your dog to be the most well-behaved, obedient dog in your neighborhood. I’m not kidding - all it takes is an hour or two each day (more time if you can afford it) and lots of praise.

An hour each day may seem like a lifetime for some people, but on the other hand, if 60 minutes of your day cannot be devoted to your lovable canine friend, you might want to reconsider your pet-owning priorities.

Some Research Will Be Needed
Of course you will have to invest into dog training materials, books, and any other items that can show you step-by-step how to train your dog or puppy. And digging through dog training books does not have to be a dreaded task. Personally speaking, it is my favorite part of training my pets. I absolutely love reading through dog training books, watching videos, and really seeing what amazing results that these intelligent dogs can display.

Training your dog is a wonderful opportunity to develop trust between you and your pet. You will be spending a lot of time together, which is always a positive thing. In fact, even if your training regimen doesn’t go as planned for each lesson, you should always keep in mind that just spending time with your dog is enough to prevent behavior problems in the future.

Many dog owners complain that their pets have behavior problems and obedience issues. When these cases are looked at thoroughly, we can usually find that neglect is the number one root cause. Dogs get lonely when nobody spends time with them and without enough attention, your dog will act out and try to communicate that he wants your time. So why not spend a few moments with your dog and get some training done at the same time?

Dog Training Games
Always let your dog know that you are proud of him whenever he displays a behavior that is positive. These actions do not have to be monumental feats. Anything small is worth giving your dog a pat on the back and a loving chat.

Dog training does not have to be complex. Take a seat in your backyard on a sunny afternoon and just throw the ball around with your dog. Just by instinct alone, he will learn to fetch and retrieve the ball back to you. What started out as fun, leisurely time with your dog, is also a form of dog training, even if you are just hanging out in the backyard, sipping on ice-tea, and tossing the ball back and forth to your dog.

There are plenty of other examples where dog training can be implemented without going to the extremes of detailed, lengthy training protocols. It all depends on what you want your dog to learn. If you are not overly concerned about your pet knowing more than a handful of commands - that is perfectly fine - just continue simple games like fetch, retrieve, or even chase.

Dog Tricks: How To Teach Your Dog Go Find Anything You Ask For

One of the best ways to bond with your dog, while at the same time stimulating his mind, is to teach him new tricks as often as possible. Training a dog to learn new things not only gets his mind working, but also teaches the brain to analyze and process information, thus producing a more intelligent and responsive dog.

Another interesting aspect of teaching your dog new tricks everyday is that he will start to understand specific words within the human language. For instance, below we are going to show you how to teach your dog to “Find It”. After persistent training and practice of this trick, your dog will eventually be able to find a specific toy within a pile of dozens of other objects. Not only is this entertaining for you, but it activates the animal’s thinking process by expanding his understanding of your vocabulary.

The Trick: Find It!
To begin training, line up about six or seven objects on the floor. Then ask your dog to locate a specific one. It is much easier if you start by sending your dog to retrieve something that he is familiar with.

For example, his favorite toy or food dish would be perfect starter objects. Now place the specific object you want him to find right next to a group of other, unfamiliar objects. The other items should be made up of boring, non-attractive things, such as a book, or a glass, etc. The reason for this is to make it easier for him to make the obvious choice when first being introduced to this trick.

Now point your finger to all of the objects that are lying on the floor and tell your dog to “Find The Toy”. Without much hesitation he should put the right object in his mouth, and when he does, shower him with praise and offer a treat.

If your dog already knows how to fetch then have him bring the toy back to you. And if he does not know how to fetch then this is a great time to get him started!

Important: If you give your dog a treat for his good work at finding the right object, do not feed it to him while that particular object is lying close by. Dogs are quick to associate positive feelings with many experiences, and he might only go for the toy simply because he thinks he will get a treat each time, thus preventing him from learning new objects later on.

The next step is to place a different item amongst the pile of objects. Perhaps this time choose his food dish or a small ball. Run the sequence over again by pointing to the object and telling him to “Find The Dish”.

If he picks the wrong item, say “Nope”, and repeat “Find The Dish” over and over until he makes the right choice. Eventually he will be able to associate the name of each object and fetch it for you without fail.

Choosing a Good Obedience School for Your Dog

Choosing a Good Obedience School for Your Dog

Most dog owners want their dog to be well-behaved and well-trained. Even with our best efforts, we don’t always have enough time to spend on properly training our dogs and they can become a little problematic. The good news is that you can get help by signing your dog up for obedience school.

Is your dog disobedient? Have you given up on trying to make your dog obey your commands? Do you often find chewed up items when you return from work? Do you avoid walking your dog in broad daylight because you don’t want the neighbors to see how poorly behaved he is when around other dogs and people? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to realize that you don’t have to give up transforming your dog into a controllable and well-behaved dog. By properly training your dog, your life will become a lot easier. Your dog will always come to you when you call him. You won’t get into legal problems because of your dog aggressing the neighbor’s kid and you won’t get complaints from the neighbors because your dog doesn’t stop barking or howling.

An obedience school trainer will be able to give you an idea about how you can make your pet pay attention to you. These trainers will train your dog on how to act with other dogs and people around. They will also teach your dog fundamental instructions (sit, stay, heel and come). Your dog will also enjoy training as he gets to spend time with you, which is what he wants first and foremost.

Selecting a dog obedience school is a little like picking a school for your kids. You want to make the right decision so you should look at all your options before making a decision. Fortunately, you will be attending along with your dog, so you’ll know for sure if you made the right decision. Talk to friends, coworkers and family members who have used obedience schools and see if they would recommend a school to you.

You can also contact the obedience school and ask for the contact information of one of their previous customers. Be ready with a list of questions before you call this person out of the blue! If you hear positive things about the school you are considering, then it’s a good sign. If you don’t, you should look elsewhere.

You should also include a visit to the obedience schools that you are considering. After all, you want to train your dog in a nice atmosphere, don’t you? Check to see if the buildings appear structurally sound and well kept and if the instructors are well trained. You want to find a school where you and your dog will be comfortable.

Take the time to get to know the trainers at the dog obedience school you are considering. Ask them which techniques they use and you can even bring your dog to visit to make sure he would enjoy this particular training school. If both you and your dog are comfortable with a trainer, obedience training will be a lot smoother.

Off-Leash Training (4)

Off-Leash Training (4)

Off-leash training is a transition because it is, most definitely, a slow process.

It would be nice if we could just reach down, unsnap the leash, and know that your dog would instantly obey the commands “Come”, “Sit”, “Down”, “Stay”, and “Heel”. Regardless of how proficient a dog may be in basic obedience while attached to the leash, his efficiency diminishes about 80% once the leash is removed.

While heeling, he will lag terribly, go wide on the turns, forge ahead and sit in front of you when you stop. Sometimes, it is as if the unsnapping of a leash erases everything on the memory of a dog’s mind.

On a sit-stay exercise, without the benefit of a leash, a dog suddenly realizes that his owner is powerless to do anything in the way of correction in the event of disobedience. Should the dog then bolt and runs, the command “Come” falls on seemingly deaf ears.

To begin off-leash work without making the proper transition would be the same as standing a baby on his two feet to walk before he had even had an opportunity to perfect his crawling technique. On the other hand, to begin making the transition before your dog has demonstrated absolute perfection and control in his work on leash would be a total waste of time.

If your dog needs constant correction while heeling on-leash, he will need the same constant correction while heeling without the benefit of the leash; but without a leash, how are you going to make a correction? Your dog should be able to perform all basic obedience exercises willingly, smartly, and with no opposition, before you undertake the transition to off-leash work.

If you have followed proper obedience training from the very beginning, you will now begin to realize why so much emphasis was placed on correct heeling techniques.

You were constantly reminded to keep a belly of slack in the leash at all times. Instructions were explicit that dogs were not to be allowed to forge ahead and tighten the leash. One of the purposes, of course, was for the dog to get used to feeling no connection between him and his owner. Of course, if the dog spends ten weeks being restrained by the leash while heeling, there’s not a bond of affection that’s strong enough to hold that dog in the proper heel position once the leash is off.
