No more Rick Roll
It's been so long of being Rick Rolled that it's very rare that I actually ever stop and say "oh you...ya got me!" I think I've had enough with being Rickrolled.

Antivirus Songs. WTF?

Though I'm a fan of nerdcore and computer-themed music, sometimes people take it too far.

Machine translation vs professional translation
Periodically, a customer that I deal with will suggest that they would like to expand globally and have their website translated to another language. Typically, I think this is a great idea and point them in the direction of services for such translation. When they opt for machine translation*, I usually try to simply tell them 'no'.

Western Digital VelociRaptor Benchmarks vs SSD
Has any seen the benchmarks on these things?  From the looks of it, it will be giving all of the solid state drive vendors a run for their money (or at least me for mine).

Joomla! and TinyMCE domain issue
I recently stumbled across an issue after an end-user was having a problem with Joomla! and logged in to edit some content items.

TinyMCE would show up fine as their editor but anytime that they would try to open the related pages within the editor including help, they would receive an blank page with a javascript error and an unparsed javascript string in the title such as these with their corresponding pages:

Ultima Online - Doin it old school
Recently I have been searching for a game to occupy my free time and in that search I've stumbled upon quite a few of my old stomping grounds. One of them being Ultima Online. I'd never paid for the game to play, and I defintely wasn't about to start. So I started perusing the web searching for a decent free shard. I had remember past experiences where I'd find a free shard that was either totally deserted, or varied so much form the actual game that it really wasn't UO anymore. Finally I had found what I had been looking for.

Internet Explorer is the bane of my existence

Being a web developer I get to create dynamic content rich websites and I use various languages such as HTML, PHP, JavaScript, and good ole CSS. I strive to make them as web standard friendly as possible by complying to the current web standards. You'd think that'd be enough, but noooo. Web developers are struck with one of the biggest challenges when developing a website... Browsers! Unfortunately not all browsers adhere to web standards exactly the same, and some don't at all *cough* IE *cough cough*. Because of this we are often plagued with creating hacks to ensure that each browser displays the site as closely as possible as the others.

Forum Woes
So today I upgraded the forum for some new features and mostly security and stability fixes, but I ended up breaking some of the integration to other components and I lost all my CSS edits to make it more like the site template. So if you run into problems over the next couple of days I'm sorry! I'm really trying to fix the community builder plugin where CB can manage forum settings through your profile. So far I haven't had much luck in those changes actually taking effect on the forum themselves. If anyone has any knowledge or experience with either of these extensions any help would be appreciated.

Setting up a NOD32 3.0 Mirror
With ESET's recent release of their AntiVirus system NOD32 v3.0 creating a mirror for network updates has become a mystery. When in the update settings to try and configure the application as a mirror update server you may notice that the mirror tab is missing unlike it's previous 2.7 version.

My Gaming History
Many of my friends have been asking what games I've been playing in my free time lately, as I used to be quite the addict when it came to gaming. This is not to say I don't game anymore, but not nearly as frequently or adamantly as I once did. Back in the day I used to spends hours of my day playing games. Lately though I spend most of my time on WarCraft III strictly playing DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) a custom game that has become very popular across the globe (it even has a song create by a Swedish musician). If it's not DOTA, I'm usually playing LOK (Lands of Kes). Other than that I might install a non-online game from time to time and play it for a few days and then move on and every so often I load up Medal of Honor and play online to brush up on my sniping skills. Otherwise reality and other circumstantial events have taken their toll on my career as a gamer.

AMD vs Intel - The Quad Core Battle
Ever since I replaced an old Pentium 2 Celeron with a Athlon CPU I've become a AMD fanboy and haven't looked back at Intel since. Now granted because of that fact this little article may be biased, but what opinion isn't?

Lately it seems like AMD has been one step behind Intel in the CPU market.

Mod_serverstat.php division by zero fix
I noticed in AWStats, someone came to our website looking for "mod_serverstat.php division by zero fix". This error was being displayed briefly (and unfortunately at the time particular pages were being first indexed) and was being caused by a Joomla! module that we had installed by the name of Serverstat.

Since someone out there appears to want to know how to fix it and because I've found a work around, I figured I'd share the information. This fix has worked on our site monitoring the Ventrilo server since the beginning.

NOD32 Setup.xml file is damaged or missing
I encountered an error (which someone had previously told me about in response to this post) which said "114 setup.xml file is damaged or missing". I looked at the setup.xml file on another machine that had NOD32 installed and recreated the setup.xml file in C:Program FilesEsetInstall. The contents are as follows:

Google Image Labeler
I don’t know how many people are familiar with Google Image Labeler but it’s a phenomenal way to waste hours of your day and find out how very little you have in common with the rest of the world. BTW, it’s also the definition of “crowdsourcing” which is a buzzword I feel obligated to say because I operate a blog.

How to Download Youtube Videos
In case you’re not familiar with Youtube (even though according to Alexa at the time of this posting, it’s the 4th most popular site on the internet), it’s video sharing site filled with commercial and amatuer video alike.  Let’s say you find a video you like and you would like to download it.  How do you go about this?

How to download php.ini
This may seem pretty noob to some people but I’ll post it anyway since I’ve been asked a few times.

There are a lot of tweaks for PHP that you can perform by placing a local copy of php.ini in the location of your scripts and modifying the necessary values. Modifying this file will let you increase the default upload size (2MB? No way.), script max execution time and, in general, make you look like a magician.

NOD32 Uninstall Batch Script
A while ago I wrote an uninstall script for a version of NOD32 to be used in a domain setting. It may have been 2.7, it may have been 2.5. Either way, the one that I needed recently was for their new ESET “NOD32 Antivirus version 3.0″. This is a batch script that worked for me by using the current Active Directory login script to point to this batch file:

Custom File Extension Parsing with PHP and Apache

Sometime in web applications, you may feel inclined to have dynamic code in .css, .js, .htm or .html files. To get Apache to parse these types of files you can create an .htaccess file and use the ”AddHandler application/x-httpd-php” command followed by the extensions you would like to have parsed as php.  Depending on your Apache configuration, you may have to use  ”AddHandler application/x-httpd-php4” or ”AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5” for different versions.

Joomla! 1.5 keep-alive problem
Recently, I had an problem with Joomla! 1.5 where they would log in to the administration panel with IE 7 and their browser began requesting index.php?option=com_admin&tmpl=component&task=keepalive thousands and thousands of times. It was like 5-30 requests per second for this page. Though that's a lot, it wouldn't put TOO much strain on the server since the page being requested didn't have any content on it whatsoever.

The real problem was that the end user was walking away from his machine so it was pretty much flooding the server with useless traffic. Another implication of this is that since the ever-naughty behavior.keepalive function was doing its job (a little too well, of course), the website administrator may be out of the building but his session is still alive and well for any passers-by to take advantage of.

Using Google as a Weapon
After a few of the customers I deal with regularly dropped from the top of Google into the dark
abyss of the internet in October, I started looking into what changed. Eventually, I found that they were at the top of Yahoo and MSN bringing me to the conclusion that it wasn’t a problem with the site but rather in an update to Google’s special sauce.
