MAME 0.126 Play old arcade games on your PC

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with an arcade game’s data files (ROMs), MAME will more or less faithfully reproduce that game on a PC. MAME can currently emulate over 3000 unique (and over 5400 in total) classic arcade video games from the three decades of video games - ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, and even some from the current millennium.

The ROM images that MAME utilizes are “dumped” from arcade games’ original circuit-board ROM chips. MAME becomes the “hardware” for the games, taking the place of their original CPUs and support chips. Therefore, these games are NOT simulations, but the actual, original games that appeared in arcades.

MAME’s purpose is to preserve these decades of video-game history. As gaming technology continues to rush forward, MAME prevents these important “vintage” games from being lost and forgotten. This is achieved by documenting the hardware and how it functions, thanks to the talent of programmers from the MAME team and from other contributors. Being able to play the games is just a nice side-effect, which doesn’t happen all the time. MAME strives for emulating the games faithfully.

MAME doesn’t ship with the original ROM images. These need to be obtained separately.

Pictomio 1.0.10 Photo & image manager

Pictomio is a new photo manager and editor that includes a number of unique features. Designed in a way that makes it appear as if it’s competing with the commercial Adobe Lightroom, it is predominatly a black interface. It contains all the usual information, informing you of the source of your photos and much more. It ships with basic tools to enable you to enhance your photos. You can also export, create a slideshow and share photos.

Pictomio is one of the first non-Apple applications that implements a cover flow type of photo-browsing, that enables you to quickly move from one photo to another, as if you are browsing through them in a carusel format.

Mozilla Weave 0.2 Backup & synchronise Firefox 3 bookmarks

Mozilla Weave is an add-on for Firefox 3 users that will enable you to backup and synchronise your bookmarks across editions of Firefox, whatever the operating system or location. If you spend years collecting and storing bookmarks and RSS feeds, then have a system crash, you’d only need to install the Weave add-on, enter your username and password and all this info would be retrieved from the server.

At the moment Weave only enables you to automatically backup and synchronise bookmarks across your browsers (so you have the same bookmarks on every machine). In future, you’ll be able to share some bookmarks information with friends and family and more.

We’ve found Mozilla Weave to be stable, although it does appear to slow the browser from time to time, whilst it keeps synchronising your data with the Mozilla servers.

Note that this is a major new revision of Mozilla Weave and expects you to create a new account in order to synchronise your bookmarks. Slightly frustrating if you’ve already got a Weave account. Even so, seems to have been polished slightly and will now enable you to synchronise open tabs as well as form data.
