Sometimes, statistics lie. Tulane is statistically ranked as the single best passing defense in Conference USA, allowing only 209 passing yards per game. However, the reality is that Tulane might have the single worst passing defense in the conference. Based on a ‘true’ yards-per-pass attempt tally, the Green Wave rank 116th out of 120 FBS teams, allowing more than 8.2 yards per attempt.
The Green Wave overall numbers are totally skewed because they faced McNeese State, Army and Marshall, none of whom have anything resembling a high octane passing attack. In addition, every pass-first team that they’ve faced hasn’t had the need to pass in the second half – all six of Tulane’s losses this year have come by three touchdowns or more. Lastly, the Green Wave can’t stop the run either, bad news here against UTEP’s emerging backfield threat Donald Buckram.
Tulane has no home field advantage whatsoever. Playing in front of a nearly empty Superdome, the Green Wave have lost all four of their previous FBS games at home this season SU and ATS: 37-13, 54-3, 31-10 and 44-16. It was a similar story last year when Bob Toledo’s squad closed out the stretch with home losses to Army (44-13), Rice (42-17) and UAB 41-24. With an offense that has produced a grand total of 65 points in their seven lined games this year, led by ‘still developing’ frosh QB Ryan Griffin, Tulane doesn’t offer much ‘backdoor cover’ potential either.
UTEP does two things well. First, this offense scores points in bunches, a dynamic, multiple-big-play-weapon attack led by three year starter Trevor Vittatoe at quarterback. Secondly, the Miners seem to respond well to adversity, playing well off a loss. They’ve bounced back with a win and cover following each of their last three losses, and come into this came off a disappointing home loss to UAB.
Head coach Mike Price, following last week’s loss: “We’re going to continue to coach hard and play hard. I’m not throwing in the towel. We have good people and good coaches. We’ll do everything we can to beat the Tulane Green Wave.” And basically, when it comes to beating Tulane, effort is all UTEP should need, because the talent differential is most assuredly there already. (#345) 2* Take UTEP.

It’s a traditional match up as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish host the Navy Midshipmen in South Bend.
Notre Dame returns home after a a neutral site game against and over matched Washington State team in San Antonio and they are still on track to be eligible for a BCS Bowl game and QB Jimmy Clausen is looking like a Heisman Trophy candidate. Much of the talk before the season was about how soft ND’s schedule appeared, it isn’t actually so soft down the stretch to think that any of the games are a given. Notre Dame has been in a lot of close contests and though it helps to build a team’s confidence that they are never out of it, it also gives underdogs a sense of belief that the Irish are very beatable. Clausen seems to always find the ever reliable Golden Tate who has some of the best hands in the nation, and he finds him when it matters most. Defensively the Irish really struggle at times especially against the pass. Overall Notre Dame is 103rd in yards allowed, something they will need to improve on if they hope to sweep these last four games of the regular season.
Navy had been on a roll headed into last weeks game against an improving Temple team but didn’t have enough to beat the Owls in an upset loss. It was Navy’s absolute inability to pass that was their undoing and the defense surrendering just three too many points in the loss. We often hear mostly about Navy’s option offense but it’s really been the defense who has lead the Middies this year. Navy is 14th in the country in yards allowed and 20th against the pass. They will need all of it on both sides of the ball to hang with the powerful Notre Dame offense.
Notre Dame is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games and 1-6 against the spread in theor last seven overall. Navy is 5-2 against the spread following their last seven non-covers. The road team has covered 13 of the last 14 in this series and Navy has covered seven straight at South Bend.
This just looks like a case of way too many points in a game that could be fairly even when all is said and done. This might even be worth a small play on the money line.

Phoenix Suns vs. Boston Celtics Pick & Odds: November 6th 2009
Phoenix Suns vs. Boston Celtics
Free NBA Pick: Under 206.5 points -110 NBA odds

Boston’s defense is absolutely shutting down their opposition this year. They’ve held all six of their opponents to 90 points or less this year. They are holding their opponents to a solid 40.7% from the floor and 24.7% from three-point land. Boston is allowing an NBA best 81.5 points per game.
But the Celtics are not happy with their effort on Wednesday night in Minnesota. They allowed the Timberwolves to shoot 52% from the floor; the first team to shoot better than 42% against the Celtics. Minnesota also had the highest-scoring quarter (27 points) against the Celtics. “The first half, we couldn’t have been any worse,’’ said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. “We didn’t have a lot of energy. Give them credit, they attacked us and I didn’t think we were very good.’’
So look for the Celtics’ defense to play much better tonight against the fast-paced Suns. Boston has held the Suns to only 97 and 87 points their last two trips here. Phoenix also figures to be a bit fatigued as this is their third straight road game and their third game overall in the past four nights.

Big game for Boise State tonight in the WAC as the Broncos are seeking an at large BCS Bid, and could get it, if they don’t slip up here. Lousiana Tech (2-3 WAC, 3-5 overall) is a pretty good team despite their record, and an upset here would make their season! Should be a good one. Good luck and enjoy.

NFL Betting: Jaguars vs. Chiefs Odds & Pick: November 8th 2009
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Free NFL Pick: Kansas City +7 -110 odds
Visit Touthouse.com for more NFL betting picks and expert NFL picks from Tony George
Wow, The Jags favored by almost TD against anyone is quite a shock. The Jacksonville defense made Vince Young form 0-6 Tennessee last week look like a legit NFL starter at QB! The Jags have a system to where they play to the level of the team they are playing and then get beat. Not the Jack Del Rio coached Jags of previous years editions. Kansas City is no juggernaut on offense but the suspension of Larry Johnson who has managed under 3 yards a carry this season, actually is a good thing in my opinion, because Jamal Charles is better at things head coach Todd Haley wants to do on offense. He has speed and an ability to break tackles and catch out of the backfield. He also is not at odds with his teammates either, which is a huge plus for the Chiefs who are in desperate need of a win.
Kansas City is off a bye week, and healthy. Matt Cassel at QB has had little time to impress this year throwing the ball, because he has no OL to block for him. With a weak Jags front 5, and an even weaker pass rush (last in the NFL), look for KC to be able to move the chains on offense and balance their attack. Kansas City’s only win this year was on the road against Washington with the same line as this one, and they managed that win without a TD. Look for KC to score points here and trade punches on offense and keep this one within 3 points.
Jacksonville 23 KC 20 (an outright win by KC would not shock me)

Full schedule in the NBA tonight with a few interesting games on the menu. Unbeaten Denver travels to Miami to take on the Heat in what is probably the best game of the night. Phoenix travels to Boston to battle the unbeaten Celtics, as the Suns continue their East Coast stretch. Another fun matchup tonight is at the Garden where Knick fans will be extra nice to LeBron James as the Cavs make their only visit to New York city this season. Good luck and enjoy..

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers make their only trip to New York this season when they visit the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, and we look for an electric crowd to will the home club to a cover here.
The Knicks always get up for LeBron and Company anyway, as evidenced by the fact that they covered the last two meetings between these clubs last season while losing by only five points on each occasion., with one meeting coming here at MGS and the other coming in Cleveland.
Aside from the fact that the Cavs are in town, this is a rare nationally televised game for the once-proud Knicks franchise, as believe it or nit, this is their first such contest since March of 2006! That last thing New York wants to do is get embarrassed in front of a national stage, so that should keep them motivated to fight to the finish in this game.
Besides, truth be told, the Cavaliers are really not playing that well right now, as they sit at just 3-3 straight up with two of the losses coming at home, where they lost only twice all of last year, and they are just 2-4 against the spread. It also helps the Knick cause that Larry Hughes is now on their roster, and he may know a thing or two about how to defends Cleveland after playing with the Cavs for several seasons.
The bottom line is that while the Cavaliers are certainly the better team, they are far from peak form right now and they are facing a Knicks team that will be emotionally charged. Look for that emotion to allow New York to slip under this number.

Rice vs. SMU Betting Odds, Pick & Point Spread: November 7th 2009
Rice vs. SMU
Free Pick: SMU -17.5 -110 betting odds - point spreads
Visit Touthouse.com for more college football betting picks from Alex Smart
On Saturday afternoon, the Rice Owls head to Dallas to tango with the bowl-hungry SMU Mustangs. HC June Jones has his Mustangs playing good football right now, while the Owls are just waiting for a disaster of a season to come to a close. This game could be another real beating.
In as brief of a statement as possible, Rice is just awful. The Owls rank 118th in points per game (14.9) and are dead last in the country in points allowed (45.5 per game). It should come as no surprise that they only have one cover one the season, and really haven’t come close to sticking within the number in their L/3 games. Yes, Rice is coming off of a bye week, but after getting beaten down 49-7 at home by a Central Florida team with very little offensive firepower, is there really any hope going into SMU? Even though the Owls have taken on several run-happy teams this year (UCF, Navy, and Tulsa most notably), the team has an awful pass defense, averaging allowing 259.9 yards per game, the 108th best mark in the land. Texas Tech’s Air Raid dropped 508 passing yards and eight passing scores on this defense. It’s only a wonder what Jones can draw up for SMU this weekend.
Regardless whether or not QB Bo Levi Mitchell is ready to go on Saturday or not, it appears as though QB Kyle Padron is ready to take the reins under center for SMU. In the first start of his career, the freshman went 20/30 for 354 yards and two TDs against Tulsa in the Mustangs’ shocking 27-14 victory over the Golden Hurricane. All of a sudden, another trip up by Houston could put SMU in the C-USA title game with four more victories, but regardless, it feels like this is a team destined to go bowling. In Year #2 of the June Jones era, the offense is starting to take shape, as his team is averaging 279.9 passing yards per game, good enough for 18th in the land. Those numbers should improve against a porous Rice ‘D’ on Saturday.
The market just hasn’t been corrected yet in SMU games. There’s a reason that the Mustangs are 5-2 ATS and are probably headed bowling. There isn’t a bowl team in America that Rice can hang with at this point, and we’re due to see one of those patented “June Jones smack downs” that we got so accustomed to seeing when he was throwing the ball all over the place at Hawaii. The home team is 11-2 ATS in the L/13 match-ups between these rivals. That’s just icing on a cake that already looks delicious. Book it!!!

Free NBA Pick: Wizards vs. Pacers Over 207 points
Washington is content with its offense, but this defense is still soft, giving up 100 or more points in 3 of the last 4 games. Indiana doesn’t play any defense, preferring an uptempo attack under T.J. Ford. Ford scored 16 points as the Pacers won for the first time this season, over the New York Knicks, 101-89. That defense, though, is allowing 104 ppg. In 2 of their 4 games they allowed 120 and 111 points. Look for more offense than defense in this uptempo game, play the Wizards/Pacers Over the total. Courtesy of Jim Feist
Free NBA Pick: Clippers vs. Golden State Over 216 points
Both of these teams like to play an uptempo style of ball. The Clips take too many outside shots, but the pace of this game will be fast enought to make up for their shooting percentage. Allowing 100 points per isn’t a good stat to have when playing a Warriors squad that has 6 players averaging over 10 points per game in scoring. One of those players is rookie sensation Stephen Curry who is starting to get a feel for the NBA game. Don’t be surprised if both teams eclipse the 120 point barrier as they blow away the posted over total! Courtesy of Glenn Andrew
Free NBA Pick: Denver Nuggets -1
On Friday the Free play is on the Denver Nuggets. Game 511 at 7;35 eastern. The Nuggets qualify in a solid system tonight that plays on road teams who scored 120 or more points as a road favorite of -5 or more, with 1 or more days rest between -3 to +3. These road teams are 7-1 since 1995 winning by a comfortable margin. Denver is 11-4 straight up and ats on the road in this range. Miami is 0-4 vs the Nuggets of late and will get beat here tonight. On Friday we have another big system card up. On Saturday I have the 2009 College football Game of the Year from 4 different systems, including one that is 24-1 since 1980. Look for another big weekend of winners. For the free play take the Denver Nuggets. - Courtesy of Rob Vinciletti

Quick trivia question for you. Which college football team has been one of the hottest in the country over the last 1 1/2 seasons?? Would you believe Utah State? This football team is on an incredible 10-1-1 mark over their last 12 football games. They have a great quarterback running the show and Mr. Borel scares the hell out of everybody because he can do it all. Not only has he tossed 11 TD’s compared to a mere 1 INT this season, he can also kill you with his legs, as he did against Fresno, amassing 105 yards along the ground. Hawaii has nothing left in the tank and it almost seems like they are down to the ball boy when it pertains to the quarterback position. I know the Aggie won/loss record doesn’t warrant them being a favorite, especially on a distracting trip to the Islands. Despite this, I think the right team is favored and I like them here.
