DeLorme Street Atlas 2009 w/GPS crashes my Levono R61i when on external power
I am trying to run DeLorme Street Atlas 2009 on a Levono R61i. It is a 1.83ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 ghz of ram, Windows XPPRO service pack 2. I have a USGLOBALSAT MR-350 GPS modual. I can run the GPS all day with the GPS info tool provided by USGLOBALSAT. I can run the GPS with DeLorme on battery power until the battery dies. When I run the GPS with Delorme and plug in the external power the system gives me a Blue Screen of Death and re-boots. This will happen in about 1 hour of opperation. Anyone know what is going on? Thanks, OTR

By the way, which program has better detailed Canadian routes?

Help with Bluetooth GPS Holux M1000 and Microsoft AutoRoute
In few hours I am on the way to Europe and still couldn't get the thing to work...

AutoRoute Europe recognizes the reciever but when I click on "Start GPS tracking" it says that the com port is already used...

It comes with no drivers (works over bluetooth) and I wonder if I miss anything...

Any ideas?

iGuidance Demo - is it fully functional?
Is the i guidance demo a full working version of the software? I mean can I actually use it to go somewhere?

The State the USA is now in... go figure!!!
A Washington, DC, Airport Ticket Agent offers some examples of why the US is in trouble!

1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn't get messed up by being near the window. (On an airplane!) wonder if she was a blonde?? Cheesy

2. I got a call from a candidate's staffer, who wanted to go to Cape Town. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information, and then she interrupted me with, 'I'm not trying to make you look stupid, but Cape Town is in Massachusetts.' Without trying to make HER look stupid, I calmly explained, 'Cape COD is in Massachusetts. Cape TOWN is in Africa ...' Her response . . . click.

3. A senior Vermont Congressman called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that's not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, 'Don't lie to me, I looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state!'

4. I got a call from a lawmaker's wife who asked, 'Is it possible to see England from Canada?' I said, 'No.' She said, 'But they look so close on the map.' (OMG, again!)

5. An aide for a cabinet member once called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he had only a 1-hour layover in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, 'I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we will need a car to drive between gates to save time.' (:frusty:)

6. An Illinois Congresswoman called last week. She wanted to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:30 am and got to Chicago at 8:33 am. I explained that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois, but she couldn't understand the concept of time zones. Finally, I told her the plane went fast, and she bought that.:rofl"

7. A New York lawmaker called and asked, 'Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know whose luggage belongs to whom?' I said, 'No, why do you ask?' She replied, 'Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said (FAT), and I'm overweight. I think that's very rude!' After putting her on hold for a minute while I looked into it (I was laughing), I came back and explained the city code for Fresno, CA is FAT (Fresno Air Terminal), and the airline was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.:tape:

8. A Senator's aide called to inquire about a trip package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, 'Would it be cheaper to fly to California, and then take the train to Hawaii?'

9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman who was calling from the airport and asked, 'How do I know which plane to get on?' I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, 'I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these planes have numbers on them.' :smash:

10. A lady Senator called and said, 'I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola, Florida. Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?' I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola, Fl. on a commuter plane. She said, 'Yeah, whatever, smarty!'

11. A senior Senator called and had a question about the documents he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded him that he needed a visa. 'Oh, no I don't. I've been to China many times and never had to have one of those.' I double checked and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said, 'Look, I've been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!' :beatdeadhorse:

12. A New Mexico Congresswoman called to make reservations, 'I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York.' I was at a loss for words. Finally, I said, 'Are you sure that's the name of the town?' 'Yes. What flights do you have?' replied the lady. After some searching, I came back with, 'I'm sorry, ma'am, I've looked up every airport code in the country and can't find a Rhino anywhere.' The lady retorted, 'Oh, don't be silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!' So I scoured a map of the state of New York & lt; /st1:State> and finally offered, 'You don't mean Buffalo, do you?' The reply? 'Whatever! I knew it was a big animal.' :whatshesaid:

Now you know why the Government is in the shape that is now in!!!!

What would YOU have said or done...???
Remember it takes a college degree to fly a plane, but only a high school diploma to fix one, a reassurance for those who fly routinely in our jobs.

After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet,' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers.

By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.

Choosing a power inverter for your laptop
Hi All - The power inverter for Laptop GPS is a pretty important component of the system and I thought the subject deserved its own thread (hope you agree).

I travel via airplane allot - so equipment with a small/light footprint is important to me, as I typically carry on my bags. I also have to rely on the car auxiliary power port/cig lighter. Choosing a power inverter can be confusing...Here's a primer I made up to help my customers (mobile sales reps) choose the best device....

When choosing an inverter, make sure it?s properly rated for your laptop. Check your laptop?s power requirement specification in the manual and then choose a model that has a continuous power rating that exceeds your computer's requirement. A good rule of thumb is to choose one that exceeds the requirement by about 20%.

For example: If your laptop uses 60 watts of power, then you should look for a power supply that provides 20% more or a minimum of 72 watts of continuous power.

Make sure the supply is rated for ?Continuous? power ? some models will highlight their unit?s ?surge capacity? on the front of the package, and bury continuous power supplied in the specifications on the back. Inverters will only operate at their surge capacity for a limited amount of time ? and then will shut down to reset (often after getting very hot), and that?s not what you want. Generally, most laptops in use by the mobile sales rep will do fine with an inverter that provides at least 90 watts of continuous power.

Consider what other devices you?ll want to power and charge while you?re on the road ? your MP3 player or your cell phone perhaps. Some inverter units incorporate additional USB sockets to power additional equipment.

If you do plan to power additional devices off your inverter, add the wattage of all devices ? again, add at least 20%, and size the inverter accordingly.

If you travel in rental cars, I suggest getting an inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter or accessory socket with a cable. In some vehicles, space can be tight around the socket, and an inverter with a fixed plug can be difficult to insert at times. Choosing a model with a cable allows you to more easily position it in tight spaces.

Finally ? make sure your inverter has ?low battery? and ?overload? shut-off protection ? so you don?t kill the car battery if you leave your equipment running too long with the engine off ? or damage the inverter if you overload it.

*** Garmin Mobile PC: RE-ACTIVATION WARNING ***
YES, THIS NEEDS TO BE IN ALL CAPS. And perhaps stickied too. Just got off the phone with Garmin tech support.

I just changed computers from a Fujitsu TabletPC to a Panasonic Toughbook. Reinstalled MobilePC from the DVD. I have the product key version, not the one tied to a Garmin GPS.

Garmin does NOT have a license key deactivation system!!!! Now that I moved computers, my copy of Mobile PC is useless. They cannot issue me another product/license key. I thought by "uninstalling" Mobile PC from my old TabletPC it would send something to Garmin that puts my installation # back at 0. Nope. The tech suggested I buy another copy of Mobile PC. Uh, no. I have a perfectly legit and paid for copy of Mobile PC.

The activation key will reset 6 months from your original date of activation.

So the lesson here is, whatever computer you installed Mobile PC on, well, you're stuck with it for at least 6 months, and Garmin can't do anything about it. So don't change computers within the 6 months!

Stupid if you ask me. This makes me very wary of buying another Garmin product ever again.

TTS not working in my Garmin Mobile PC!
Hi all,
I recently received Garmin Mobile PC and updated it to 5.00.30
While trying out the software, I found out that the TTS isn't working.
Other than that, the voice prompts work. Ex "In 20 meters, turn left"
I don't know if TTS has worked for 5.00.00 since I have not tried out the program before updating.
Any ideas anyone?

Why will my Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 not show the Pushpins I create?

What laptop GPS software should I buy?
I just discovered this great website and I am working on reading the reviews. But I'm hoping someone can sort this all out for me and tell me what to buy.
I am a fairly sophisticated PC user, and I take my XP notebook everywhere. I don't mind learning a new software product... I just want it to be the right product.
I am well familiar with MS Streets&Trips.
I have a Garmin GPS18 USB I bought several years ago. The sensor works well, but the nRoute software looks archaic. I need some more modern software.
I see that Garmin now sells "Garmin Mobile PC", and I can buy either the software only version that should work with my GPS18, or a version that includes their new sensor. Is this the best software out there right now?
I have read mixed reviews about the newest versions of MS Streets&Trips and of DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009.
I'd like to hear from someone who has actually compared several products.
I'm taking a big road trip across the US starting Aug 1st, so I need to buy something soon.
I'd like something that keeps up to date with road construction and destinations, such as hotels and tourist sites.

Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will speak street names

We will not know all the details about the new Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 till we have a chance to test drive it ourselves, but the following pages of this discussion reveal some interesting facts already:

Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will release in early October 2008. It will include the long awaited feature:

* Voice direction prompts that include street names (turn right on Main Street, instead of just turn right).

The new Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 will also include a handful of other improvements.

* 2.5D improvements (zoom to turn, indicator icon, etc)

Will this feature now work properly? Several members here at Laptop GPS World don't like the implementation of the '3D' feature in the current Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 version, because 1. the auto-zoom feature cannot be enabled when 3D (perspective map) is enabled, and 2. the GPS icon sometimes travels outside the screen, or is just too high on the map. Have these concerns been addressed in the new Streets and Trips 2009? We will have to take it for a drive to know.

Several members here at the forum also mentioned they could no longer use Streets and Trips 2008, because of the introduction of the automatic rerouting feature. A trip painstakingly planned by a user in this #1 trip planning software, could be automatically altered against the will of the user. Some people, especially those driving larger vehicles (RVers, truckers, etc) just could not leave routing up to the computer software, so they just returned to the previous 2007 version. Will Streets and Trips 2009 let users turn off/on automatic rerouting? I don't know, because it it not quite clear from the description I just read:

* Configurable spoken street names and automatic re-routing

Does it mean both of the features are configurable? Spoken street names configurable, and also automatic re-routing configurable? And how configurable is this (or are those) feature(s)? Hmm, we will just have to wait till Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 is available for a test drive.

Chris Pendleton, Virtual Earth Tech Evangelist, Microsoft Live Search, writes more about the upcoming release of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009, and Microsoft MapPoint 2009, in his blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/virtualearth/a...rips-2009.aspx

Save Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 file as a Streets & Trips 2007 file
:help: Does anyone know how to save S&T 2008 file as a S&T 2007 file? My friends can't open my S&T 2008 files. Thanks for the help
