Makeup Tips For Green Eyes

Green eyes are really fun to work with. They have such a wide color range from turqouise to chartreuse to forest green to bright light green and on and on.

These tips are designed for the magority of green eyes, but of course there are exceptions to every rule. My best advice is to try every color that you’re interested in. You’ll be surprised what looks good.

Choosing An Eyeshadow

These colors are some of the most popular for green eyes.

Try different browns, especially chocolate tones. Browns and dark greens with copper or gold highlights are also a great choice.

Apricots and taupes are good choices for highlighters.

Dark purples, plums and metallics work too. Coppers and golds will make a really glamorous evening look for makeup tips for green eyes. I personally really like the way deep purples look with dark green eyes.

Colors To Avoid

When you’re learning makeup tips for green eyes, it also helps to know what colors you might want to avoid.

First up, blues. Any color of blue doesn’t do green eyes justice. I would recommend avoiding light blues, dark blues and even some colors (purples or pinks) with blue undertones.

Pinks are also a hard color to judge. Some can look really, really good and others can look really, really bad. This is usually a matter of trial and error.

Silvers are not a good choice either. Leave them for the blue eyes.

Eyeliner Colors

Unless you really like black eyeliner, it’s usually a color to avoid. Try steely grays or chocolate browns. Use gold or white to open up the eye if your eyes are small.

The Rule Of Thumb

A good rule of thumb when choosing a color for makeup tips for green eyes is to focus on warm colors and avoid cool colors.

Like I said, there are exceptions to every rule, but this should provide a nearly fail-safe method for choosing eyeshadow colors to bring out the beauty of your green eyes.

The Application

How you apply your eyeshadow depends how many colors you’re wearing and what the occasion is.

For basic every day wear, here’s what you do.

1. Apply a highlighter like crystalline to the entire eye from the bottom of the crease to the eyebrow.

2. Use a taupe or apricot next and apply it to the whole eyelid and blend it just above the crease with the crystalline.

3. Then use your third color (chocolate brown, dark green, copper, etc.) and apply it one of two ways:

a. Apply it from the middle of your eyelid from the eyelash to just above the crease. Blend it well. You can even blend it under the lower lashes for a more dramatic look.

b. Apply it from the inner corner of your eyelid and sweep it out to the outer corner of your eye. It will get thicker the further out you go. Blend well.

4. Apply eyeliner and mascara as you normally would.

And there you go! Great makeup tips for green eyes.

Applying Makeup the Right Way - Easy, Quick Make-Up Application and Beauty Tips

Now that you’ve spent a fortune on that ‘perfect finish’ mineral or liquid makeup that is all the rage, what’s next? You browse fashion magazines to study the makeup effects of the models and stars and spend hours in front of the mirror every morning applying ‘your face’. Why doesn’t it look right? What’s it gonna take?

Let the sun shine

Is your makeup area well lit? Is it TOO well lit? Try adjusting the lighting and you may discover that you are finally able to cover flaws and highlight your strengths without much difficulty. Consider investing in one of those free-standing makeup mirrors which has adjustable lighting for day, evening and office. You can sometimes pick them up at yard sales and Goodwill for a dollar or two!

Say cheese!

Now, close your eyes and picture…you! Is the look you are aiming for realistic? Does it ‘fit’ you? Does it fit your lifestyle? These are important questions to ask yourself because for any ‘look’ to look RIGHT, it has to look like you - your personality, your lifestyle.

If only I could look like…

Ok, now, you’re still thinking of all of those gorgeous babes in the magazines, eh? Well, pick one of them who has similar features to your own. For me, that’d probably be Barbra Streisand (that nose - sigh!) But, man, what a beautiful lady! Muted shadows, earth tones, light/sheer lips. That’s the look that works for me, just as it always has for her.

Tone it down

Speaking of earth tones and sheer…are you choosing the right colors to complement your skin tone, personality and lifestyle? For example, I’m fair skinned, am a single, working mom and have a decidedly off-kilter sense of humor. I don’t need bright blue and violet eye shadows to draw attention to myself, my mouth usually does that for me! And, with my fair complexion, the earth tones blend and accentuate, not over-power.

And speaking of single motherhood, who has TIME to do the dramatic, stop-you-in-your-tracks effects that so many models show off?

A side note

Here’s a great example of using eye makeup to accentuate, not compete with, your eyes. My 19-year-old popped her head in while I was writing this article to tell me she was off to see her boyfriend. I looked up to tell her to have fun and be careful and noticed her eye shadow. The kid had put sparkly white all over her eyelid. Pretty color, but not for her. She, like her mom, is fair skinned and she has BRIGHT blue eyes.

So, I simply said “c’mere Jess” and I took one muted sparkly medium brown color eye shadow, and using an eye shadow brush, brushed it lightly over the base of her lid. “Ok, go look”

“Wow, that really makes my eyes pop, mom, thanks!” I hear from the bathroom. And it did make her eyes pop. Muted earth tones to offset some brilliantly bright blue eyes. And it took all of 45 seconds to do.

Practice makes perfect

Learn by doing, and by having a friend apply your makeup. Take turns with a friend for an afternoon applying each other’s makeup. See through someone else’s eyes how they picture you. If you have daughters who are old enough, do this with them. You may not like, or feel comfortable, with every makeup trick they tried, but I bet you’ll pick up one or two that you do like and you’d never thought of.

A solid foundation

Selecting your foundation color is the essential first step to a beautiful face. Keep in mind the season - what looks gorgeous with that mid-July sun-kissed tan of yours will look like a Halloween mask by late October, so take a look at your color selections often.

Blending basics

For a liquid foundation, apply with fingertips or a sponge, starting with your forehead and working down to your chin in a ‘T’ shape and then smoothly blend out towards the edges of your face. Don’t use too much pressure during the blending and don’t forget your neck! A makeup line around your jaw line is just not the ‘cosmo look’ I know you’re going for! Personally, I am in love with mineral makeup. I like how it applies, how it blends, how it stays and also how it allows my skin to breathe. I do have to say that Bare Escentuals is the best I’ve found (and no, I don’t sell their product, but I do swear by them!)

The eyes have it

Choose colors which complement and emphasize your eyes, not compete with them. If you have big, beautiful, brown eyes, then greens and golds are a perfect choice. Blue eyes go great with muted earth tones and green eyes just look amazing with the purples and violets. These don’t have to be BRIGHT shades, you can find muted shades of most any color to complement your eyes. Those of us with variable eye color, or hazel eyes, can wear almost any color and have it set off our eyes, but I would steer clear of the blues!

I’ve found that powder eye shadows (loose powder), when applied with a good quality eye shadow brush, tend to look the most natural and stay in place the longest. If you have problems keeping your shadow in place, try brushing a layer of finishing powder or mineral makeup lightly over the lid before applying the shadow.

For eye liner - I like the powders, but, even if you like the liquid, remember one thing - smudge your liner enough that it doesn’t look like someone took a sharpie to your eyes! Line from the start of your bottom lashes towards the corner of your eye to the outer corner. On the upper lid, line as close to the base of your lashes as you can - and smudge enough that it is an effect and not a ‘line’. NEVER completely encircle your eye (lining the inside corner) unless you have absolutely huge eyes as lining all the way around makes your eyes look much, much smaller. And this is usually not the end result we women are looking for!

Just cheeky!

Here’s where most of us have some problems. What I do is use a bronzer *lightly* across cheekbones and then do a light dusting of a very sheer rosy color over my entire face and neck to give my face a healthy, glowing look. The key here is ‘less is more’. You want to look rosy and healthy, not look like a painted ventriloquist’s dummy! Use a soft, wide, natural-bristled make-up brush and finish with an almost sheer light finishing powder all over face and neck. (This extends the lifespan of your makeup and evens out your facial tone)

Kissy, kissy

Last but certainly not least - the lips. Choose a muted-tone liner, one that is at least the same shade as your lipstick, if not one shade lighter. Now, I’m notorious for licking and biting my lips all day and lipstick usually doesn’t have a prayer of staying put for more than about 10 minutes. So, what I do is use a lip pencil that is in a little darker hue of a shade I like (I love the mauves) and line my lips. (tip: don’t line the corners of your lips - only line TO the corners of your lips)

After lining, I actually use the lip liner to fill in with color on my lips, then put on a layer of lip plumping gloss in a lighter shade to offset the darker lip liner. This works well for me as I have thin lips and it stays much better than any lipstick I’ve tried (and I’ve tried most of the “this will last all day” stuff!).

Wala - you’re well on your way to a gorgeous you!

The History of Cosmetics and Makeup

The history of cosmetics and makeup goes back a few thousand years. Depending on what century one was born in cosmetics and makeup had different meanings for different people throughout each century. You should also know that cosmetics and makeup have different definitions. Here you will learn the difference.

Cosmetics are anything applied to the face or body in order to improve your appearance. Cosmetics include anything from cold cream, hand cream, eye cream, astringent, after-shave lotion, suntan lotion, talcum, bath powder, body paint, solid perfume, bath oil, bath gel, hair dye, hair bleach, mouthwash, nail polish remover, mustache wax, facial pack, mud pack, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, cream rinse, hair mousse, styling gel, hair spray, shaving soap, shaving cream, shaving foam, depilatory, deodorant, antiperspirant and the usual facial makeup.

Makeup is a branch of cosmetics that has to do with beautifying of the face. So, eyebrow pencil, mascara, eye shadow, eye liner, rouge, blusher, toner, lip slicker, face slicker, lipstick, lip rouge, lip liner, lip gloss, powder base, moisturizer, foundation, loose powder, pressed powder, bronzer and pancake makeup comprise a small part of cosmetics.

The first evidence of cosmetics usage is found in ancient Egypt around 4000 BC. The Romans and Egyptian used cosmetics containing mercury and white lead. Ancient Egyptians had a wide extent of make-up tools. One of them is kohl, which was used to outline the eyes. Kohl is made up of lead, copper, burned almonds, soot, and other ingredients one of which may have been arsenic. It was believed that eye makeup could ward off evil spirits and improve the sight. Even the poor wore eye make-up in ancient Egypt.

Cosmetics were also used in Persia and what is today the Middle East. One of the earliest cosmetologists was the physician Abu a-Qasim al-Zahrawi, or Abulcasis (936-1013 AD), who wrote the 30-volume medical encyclopedia Al-Tasrif. A chapter of the 19th volume was dedicated to cosmetics. Al-Zahrawi considered cosmetics a branch of medicine, which he called “Medicine of Beauty.”

During the early years of the 20th century, makeup became fashionable in the United States and Europe. But the most influential new development of all was that of the movie industry in Hollywood. Among those who saw the opportunity for mass-marketing cosmetics were Max Factor, Sr., Elizabeth Arden, and Helena Rubinstein.

Flapper style era influenced the cosmetics of the 1920s, which embraced dark eyes, red lipstick, red nail polish, and the suntan, invented as a fashion statement by Coco Chanel. Previously, suntans had only been sported by agricultural workers, while fashionable women kept their skins as pale as possible. In the wake of Chanel’s adoption of the suntan, dozens of new fake tan products were produced to help both men and women achieve the “sun-kissed” look. In Asia, skin whitening continued to represent the ideal of beauty, as it does to this day. During the 1960s and 1970s, many women in the western world influenced by feminism decided to go without any cosmetics. Cosmetics in the 1970s were divided into a “natural look” for day and a more sexualized image for evening.

Cosmetics and makeup in ancient times stood for symbolism of the class of your family. Throughout the years, men and women have used makeup for different reasons. As of today, cosmetics and makeup is used or not used by people who want to make a statement one way or the other.

The Best Makeup Primer For Under $7!

Stand back Laura Mercier and SmashBox, there’s a new makeup primer in town and it only costs $7! Technically speaking, it’s not actually a makeup primer but makeup artists and girls in the know have been using it as such with fantastic results.

So, what is it? It’s Monistat Chafing Gel!

Originally intended as a treatment for irritated skin, this colorless gel is now also being used to create a perfect canvas before makeup application.

The reason why it works so well is that it contains high amounts of dimethicone, the same skin-smoothing ingredient used in award-winning makeup primers, such as Smashbox’s Photo Finish or Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer. And since it was originally created for sensitive skin, including the bikini area, there’s no concern about applying it to your face.

According to the manufacturer, Monistat Chafing Gel is:

  • A non-greasy powder-gel skin protectant formula with dimethicone.
  • An easy-to-apply gel that dries to form a silky, breathable barrier. It calms skin while preventing the irritation caused by moisture, heat and movement. It’s also great for soothing skin after shaving or waxing.
  • Fragrance-free and non-staining.
  • A non-irritating formula with vitamin E and soothing aloe. Gentle enough for daily use on even your most delicate areas.

Ingredients:

Active Ingredients: Dimethicone (1.2%); Inactive Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica, Tocopheryl Acetate, Trisiloxane.

From a price standpoint, you can’t beat it either. At less than $7 for a 1.5oz tube, compared to over $30 for the leading brands’ 1oz tubes, you have nothing to lose and only flawless makeup to gain.
