Hi All
Hi all, I've been away from the internet for a bit (not by choice. I didn't have good access for a little while). Got it back now, along with a new video camcorder, the Aiptek Action HD 1080p.
Took this video at work. Sorry about the bounciness. I wasn't using a tripod. If you go to Vimeo to watch the video, you can watch it in all of it's HD glory.

Video Blog - Updates
Just a quick update on what's going on in my life. :-)
PicLens Screencast
PicLens is a browser extension for Explorer, Safari and Firefox (and a few others I think) that lets you see certain sites on the internet in 3d. It's pretty cool. I'm more interested in Pogo, AT&T's upcoming 3d browser, but this will do until that comes out of private beta (I'm on the waiting list for that.)
I did a short little screencast, demonstrating how it works. It's actually not all that exciting. I really think Pogo is going to change the landscape, though.
OMG
It's a long standing joke in the open source world that Microsoft Considers Open Source a form of communism. I even have the following poster on my wall to remind myself who the enemy really is (and no, it's not open source.) But Ballmer actually said open source was Communism in 2000! Link to the quote below the poster (from the Reigster).

Link to Ballmer's Quote
EVIL! LOL. Hey Ballmer, if Open Source is Communism, then I'm a proud Marxist!
Fighting Mad - Update
Regarding my previous entry about blogcritics changing my article title without notifying me, I received an explanation:
"This was all brought to a head when a directly involved party contested aspects of the article, especially the tone of the title. Hence the change."
In other words, Sun or someone else involved made a request (probably through their attorney) and blogcritics caved rather than face legal action. Obviously, the first amendment doesn't mean much there.
*sigh* Why is the world full of cowards? Obviously, integrity and standing by your writers and the truth aren't values that blogcritics upholds.
Fighting Mad
I wrote an article for blogcritics.org entitled "Sun Microsystems' Bright Shining Lie". It ran for a few days under that title, and it was commented on by Marten Mickos, the former CEO of MySQL and now a Senior VP at Sun. He presented his views in relationship to my editorial, and all was good.
And then suddenly, inexplicably, without any warning whatsoever, the title of my article was changed to "Sun Microsystems and MySQL". I was never notified. This may seem minor, but it's huge. Blogcritics claims that I retain all the rights to my material, yet they changed that material willy nilly without so much as an email saying "Ooops, sorry, we have to change it."
So I sent an email to the mailing list asking why it was changed. Response: Email the editor. What???? So you do some dirty underhanded trick, and then expect me to deal with it in the darkness of private email? Hells no, I want this in the light for all to see.
I've worked in publishing. I've done freelance work for several print publications. NEVER, EVER has something I've written been changed after it was accepted in its final form, and I was getting paid for that stuff. Why these so-called editors believe they can change my work without so much as an email is beyond me. This is unacceptable. I'm trying to get in touch with the publisher. I want the article pulled. Changing the title changes the tone of my argument, and it is no longer my original material.
I'm sure that the end result of this will be my ejection from blogcritics.org. I'm too loud and too vocal, and I won't take "deal with it" as an answer. I'll keep raising my voice until I get an explanation. It's pretty clear to me that the reason it was changed was that Sun Microsystems requested it be changed. There's no other reason it would have been changed. If they violated the fabric of my article in order to appease the target of that editorial, I am going to more than just a tad bit angry. I understand that blogcritics is not a magazine or a newspaper, but they bill themselves as "an online magazine", which means they should be held to the same standards of journalistic integrity as any other magazine. That means not being bullied by bigger entities, and publishing the truth at any cost. I guess I'm just too damn idealistic to deal with cowards.
What I Believe About My God
Just some random thoughts I had while waking up from a nap I sorely needed.
What I Believe About My God
I believe....
- That He puts people in my life for a reason.
- That He has a plan for me and everyone else, and while I'll never know what the whole plan is while I'm alive, I'll get bits and pieces of information that'll make it all easier.
- That He is absolutely loving.
- That He sometimes talks to me through the people around me, if I'm willing to listen.
- That prayer is when I talk to God, and meditation is when I listen for a response.
- That when I pray, sometimes God says no, and that's okay. Sometimes He says yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean yes on my time or on my terms.
- That He accepts me as I am right now. That doesn't mean I don't have things to change, but that if I were to die today, I know He'd accept me as I am.
- That He created me with a purpose, and I don't have to know what that purpose is.
- That He created the world with a purpose, and part of my purpose is to accept people and situations as they are, not how I want them to be.
- That injustice is something He doesn't want, and I have to stand up and make my voice heard whenever I see injustice.
- That He is the center of the universe, which means I am not.
- That if He brings me to a situation, He'll bring me through it.
- That He wants me to do the next right thing in front of me to do every single day.
Awesome Day
I've got a new upstairs neighbor. He's a tech who fell on hard times and was in prison for five years. He came out with nothing. I had an old laptop sitting around, but it just wasn't working. But I said to him "Let's try to fix it." I plugged it in and like a miracle, it turned right on with no problem. I handed him the laptop and said "It's yours for as long as it works." He was dumbstruck, but I have no need for it, and it's just taking up space. It's too old to sell, and it works well enough for him to use email and surf the web. It'll keep him occupied until his gets himself a job and a decent computer, and who knows, it might help him find a job. I'm not telling this story to toot my own horn. I'm telling this story because I just want to say what an awesome God I have in my life. I had just plugged the laptop in a week before to test it, and it was dead. It would not come on. It hasn't worked in months, and I was going to throw it out, but I thought I'd give it one more shot. I was going to work on it this weekend. He needed it, and suddenly it worked, and I knew what had to be done. God obviously wanted him to have this laptop.
wallpapers 1
I spend a lot of time with photoshop just playing around. I fell in love with Griskevicius Jurgis's Open Source logo, which is licensed under Creative Commons and can be found at his web site. So, I decided to make some modifications and post them here. Again, the original design is attributed to Griskevicius Jurgis. I just Appleized it turned it into wallpapers, both standard 4:3 and widescreen. These, like the originals, are licensed under Creative Commons. A link to the license is underneath the wallpapers.
You can click on them for biggie goodness.
The Neal Show
I'm really digging "The Neal Show." The host is Neal Campbell. Most people are more familiar with his wife, Cali Lewis, the host of Geekbrief.tv. The Neal show is basically a podcast about what ever Neal feels like talking about, and it's generally amusing and has a very warm feel to it. I feel like I've stepped into Neal and Cali's living room every time I listen to it. Neal says he wants no one to listen to it, but I think EVERYONE should. It's just an awesome way to spend five or six minutes, and it cheers me up immensely whenever I listen.
Twitter for Bears?
I've been playing around with open source twitter clones, and I said to myself: Self: Twitter for bears/cubs/chubs and admirers would be awful neat.
I'd do it just for fun, so no revenue stream. There'd be no tech support, obviously. It would either work or it wouldn't. I'd probably write a python client to make it easier to use, when I get the time.
Would anyone be interested in such a beast? Or are there too many twitter clones already?

Copy and paste is key here people. If you can't do it, you'll be doing a lot of looking back and forth and a lot of typing. Either way, I hope you're up to the challenge!!
Copy and paste the questions into a comment and answer them. Then(if you haven't already) post them on your journal so I can go back and copy and paste my answers from someone else's journals.........and post it to yours.

Writer's Block: Happy Earth Day
Screw Earth Day. I'm an American. I have the absolute RIGHT to despoil the environment and lay waste to the planet! *ducks to avoid the eco-nazi hippies* :p
Okay, actual answer: I don't buy into the global warming paranoia/hysteria. Still, I don't litter, and I run only one burner on the stove at a time to prevent waste of electricity. I dont' have a driver's license, so I don't drive. Walk everywhere, unless Ed takes me somewhere, and he has a hybrid. I'm more concerned about ending dependence on foreign oil than I am about CFC's and contaminants. The fact that the first will help the second isn't really of much concern to me. I know, it's politically incorrect. Don't care. It's just not one of my priorities.
Writer's Block: Almost Famous
Fame is overrated. I just want to make a difference.

Inspirational Music
I'm listening to the Jurassic Park Theme music. Every time I hear it, I get inspired to write code like mad. Something about it just makes me want to create. I remember the first time I heard it. I was 21, and was sitting in a theater. At first the music didn't really stir that much up in me. Then, there's the scene where Dr. Grant sees the large Saurapods for the first time, and I gripped my seat. I couldn't believe it. It was like a dream come true. I had always loved dinosaurs, and I wanted to be a vertebrate paleontologist, but decided that majoring in vertebrate paleontology was the same as majoring in unemployment. There, on the screen in front of me, was the most life like dinosaur I had EVER seen (and I'm still much more impressed with the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park than the ones in later movies like the King Kong remake). For me, there's an attachment between this song and art.
So does anyone have a song they feel the same way about?

Oh Well
Oh Well, I was gonna put up a video blog post tonight, but Vimeo has a 35 minute wait queue for encoding, and I'm just too tired to wait that long. Tomorrow, I guess.
*sigh* Technology is wonderful, but I'm just too impatient for it sometimes, lol.
