Leadership and Management - True Leaders Build lasting Relationships

Building relationships reflects the interactive, mutual and shared nature of leader’s actions.  The creation of a quality relationship makes it possible to communicate, to affect the shared vision and to form the culture that supports the vision. Shared values are significant to the nature of the relationships and facilitate achievement of the vision. These relationships have been described as being common, two-way, joint communication.  Trusting your supporters first builds reliability and leads them to trust the leader. True leaders are approachable and respect the needs and interests of others. They facilitate, empower and challenge followers to do their best. The common relationship is equitable and considerate, showing genuine concern for others. True leaders offer support, and they are helpful to others, including mentoring, supporting and teaching. In addition, because they challenge followers to extend and take reasonable risks, these leaders are forgiving when efforts do not succeed as expected. Leaders emphasize recognition, essential rewards, and professional development opportunities. They construct a culture regardless of at home, work or within the community to support each other and the shared vision.

Leadership and Management - True Leaders Communicate the Vision

The vision is first developed through speaking to one another. To keep the vision alive, it must be articulated in many forms. Communicating the vision is a solution to instilling shared meaning and purpose. Communication regarding the vision is used to excite, inspire, motivate and unify both followers and leaders. Communication is the process in which we elevate the moral purpose of the shared vision, building relationships, and shaping the culture. Listening is the most important component of communication for effective leaders. True leaders listen so as to fully comprehend the perceptions of followers, their needs and desires.  The world is moved by highly motivated people—people who believe very strongly or who want something very much.

Where there is no vision, the people perish. - Proverbs 29:18

Leadership and Management - True Leaders Create a Shared Vision

I am a firm believer that before you are able to successful lead others you must learn to effectively lead yourself. You must learn to manage your own time effectively and develop your own personal mission and vision. To be an effective leader you must also learn about the importance of setting goals that are in alignment with your mission and vision. All of these steps are critical to the success of a true leader. A true leader should use their abilities to lead their home, community and workplace.

A vision is an expressive picture of a prospective future situation. That vision may have initiated with a single person, but often is an expression of a collection of ideas shared by the leader and several others. By producing these ideas and elevating them in a way that touch’s on the needs and desires of others, the leader begins to raise the vision to a moral level, a vision for the common good.  Over time the vision becomes a source of force and even excitement for the group that gives meaning to their work. As the vision becomes embraced by others, it begins to take on a life of its own. In the most excellent scenario it becomes a shared vision, elevated beyond the original concepts of the leader. Several characteristics are attributed to a shared vision. It provides meaning for the others who have a stake in its success. It is stimulating and often exciting, inspiring individuals to go the extra mile and to make the effort to attain the vision. The collective nature of the vision is unifying, creating a sense of wholeness.  Another characteristic of this premise is change or adaptation. The shared vision provides direction and focuses its attention on the anticipated changes. The changes are opportunities and possibilities. The shared vision helps simplify new expectations for both leaders and followers. True leaders expect to make a difference, to create reform and to innovate.

Fuel for Healthier Living

Positive expressive energy is essential to creating good health, happiness and prosperity. The more optimistic you are, the more enriched and fulfilled your life will be.  Positive sentiments provide you fuel, while negative sentiments or emotions diminish your fuel capacity. When you are energized and content you love and enjoy everything that surrounds you, right? But when you are irritated or unhappy, or enclose feelings of negativity, you feel tired and frustrated and, eventually, burned out.  An emotional fuel is a far more distinguished form of energy, and it is extremely essential to healthy emotional operation.  If you do not consume all your fuel in the expression of negative emotions, such as lack of confidence, fear, doubt, anger, and bitterness, your emotional energies can be conserved. If your energy is conserved at one level, your body continues to refine and utilize fuel for the most appropriate time or when you need it the most!

5 Successful Networking Tips

According, to Webster Dictionary networking is defined as:  The exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions.  Networking is simple. It’s relaxed. It’s just talking. And yet many people are petrified at the thought of engaging in conversation with others. The objective of networking isn’t to meet people; it’s to make sure that the people you meet remember you. Keep in mind, it’s important to view connection-making as one of the keys to your success. Converting yourself into a successful networker will be crucial to your career. It opens up doors, provides new insights, and validates your outlook for the future.  The way to measure your networking success is based upon how quickly the people you meet return your phone calls, answer your emails or volunteer to help you out.

Here are 5 strategies for successful networking:

  1. Always be “Open” to expand Your Network.  Be open to meeting new people regardless, of the setting. You can be at work, the grocery store or the library offering a few kind words to someone can open doors to all sorts of possibilities. Before striking up a conversation with someone always remember to be sincere in your approach.
  2. Try not to make a bad impression.  When attending networking venues what you say, and how you act will formulate the thoughts an opinion of those you meet.  When you can’t remember someone’s names or, worse, forget that you’ve met someone before, it makes a bad impression. Try your best to remember people names and practice saying these very words “nice to see you” instead of “nice to meet you” this will cut down on the embarrassing moments.
  3. Write things down about people you meet.  Aside from keeping the normal contact information, include personal tidbits about people’s hobbies, how you met, their children’s names, and other personal things they disclose about themselves.   That way when you contact them in the future you will be able to have a closer connection.
  4. Make Business Cards. At the end of a conversation with a new contact, it’s always smart to give them something concrete to remember you by and end with a handshake. The simplest thing you can do is create a professional-looking business card with your picture, name, email address and phone number on it.
  5. Always dress appropriately. Always wear appropriate clothing; you’ll never know when the opportunity to connect with another person will present itself.  That means even if you’re just running to the post office or the supermarket always dress appropriate.
