Revealled - 2012 Mazda RX-9
Article From Winding Road - Feb 2008

We have asked Mazda's Japanese offices several times over the past dozen year when exactly North America might be getting a car that lives up to the RX-7 sports car legend. While the RX-8 is fun enough, it is not quite as angry as we need. And the MX-5 Miata is simply cuteness-on-a-stick for single commuters and beginner circuit racers.
Mazda designers have walked us through their Nagare styling philosophy during recent auto shows. At the start of 2006 we saw the Kabura concept, which sat right on the cusp between the former design language and Nagare, and which we really liked a lot. But the RX-8 is already out there and not far from those dimensions, so whatever leads to the anticipated RX-9 needs to be bigger and make more of a statement.
So came the bigger and statement-making Nagare concept at the 2006 L.A. Auto Show. This was followed quickly by the Ryuga concept at the 2007 Detroit show, then the far-future Taiki concept at this past October's Tokyo show. It's easy to see that plans for the RX-9 are growing and maturing month by month. In fact, Mazda is promising a Nagare-influenced concept dubbed Furai at the North American International Auto Show. Base on the Courage C65 chassis the automaker raced in the ALMS a couple of seasons back, its 450 horsepower, three-rotored self is a long way from production-bound. Mazda will also show a heavily revamped 2009 RX-8. We can't wait, so here is our best guess base on what we know.
What ends up being the RX-9 will take a lot of inspiration from the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. This is logical, because early designs of the RX-7 in the mid-to late-1970s were admittedly influenced by the Lotus Elan 2+2, and the second-generation RX-7 was always considered a less-rich man's Porsche 944.
It is unclear whether Mazda will stick with two-seater tradition or feel compelled to add two useless rear seats (probably the latter, according to cources, and maybe in that case with a quirky rear half-door), but the layout will definitely hearken back to RX-7 sensibilities. Overall packaging will naturally go way beyond anything the RX-7 ever dreamed of offering, and the drive will be sports car-inspired, but more of the touring variety.
The front-engine and rear-wheel-drive scheme will remain, and all things will benefit from a limited-slip differential. But what of the engine? There have been debates raging between trying a better Renesis engine design or dumping a hot V-6, or even a V-8, under the hood. Our most up-to-date Japanese sources tell us to expect a next-generation Renesis engine that will be lighter-weight and resolve the twin goblins of overly eager oil burning and fuel consumption.
The effective capacity of the Renesis engine-depending on how you calculate it - will bump up to something near 1.8 liters (from 1.3 normal; make that 3.5 liters if you espouse the 2.6 liter thinking for the current engine) and there is talk of twin variable turbochargers being tucked in there as well. This move would be appropriate, as owners of the final-generation RX-7 in Japan still swap out the 1.3-liter original two-rotor for a larger three-rotor engine that was also widely used in Japan for the RX-7. These larger turbo Renesis engines can crank out as much as 550 horsepower, so we are in favor of such an approach.
Gears will be shifted via a new twin-clutch six-speed sequential paddle setup, so there will only be two pedals in the driver's footwell when we test the RX-9 sometimes in 2011. As the U.S. was such a hot market for the RX-7 before it was so cruelly taken away from us in 1995, Mazda is engineering the RX-9 specifically for the American premium customer.
Also look for a droptop version of the RX-9 in 2012.

Spied: 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK
Article From Winding Road - Feb 2008

Mercedes' upcoming CLK has been caught prowling the streets of Stuttgart. The current CLK convertible has been on the market since 2003 with only a minor refresh, so we were excited to see the new car ahead of its planned 2009 release.
the CLK will continue to ride on a C-class platform, and is expected to be come sportier and more luxurious when the C 206 iteration launches, Front-end changes like four new 'eyes' should keep the appearance of the CLK different from that of the C-class. Both coupe and convertible models are expected.

A 4Matic version will be available, as will the usual range of the engines from 200 horsepower on up to 428 horsepower burning gas or diesel. An AMG version or two is also a natural offering.
The CLK will face stiff competition from the likes of the BMW 3-series and the Audi A5. By the time the CLK debuts, the A5 will also be available with a cloth convertible top.

This BMW test mule may be heavily camoufiaged, but there is no denying the 2010 X3 will be styled with some cues from the 2009 BMW X6. The X3 won't have as much interior room compromised for the exterior design, but the shape will be sleeker than the current X3.
The next X3 will be based on the 3-series platform, but will be stretched and widened to help differentiate it from the 3-series wagon. On this mule, fender flares look to be quite wide, but the tires beneath them seem skinny. This is likely indicative of how much wider the X3 will be than the 3-series cars.
Suspension changes could include wishbones in the rear, but this photo isn't detailed enough to makes such a determination. The production grille could take styling cues from the Concept CS seen in Shanghai last year, but the grille seen here seems to share styling with the first-generation X3.
Powertrain details are sketchy, but the base engine may be a 3.0 liter inline-six. Since every other BMW seems to be getting the hot 3.0 liter twin-turbo inline-six, it's also possible the X3 will get the twin turbo engine option, which would be needed to compete with Infiniti's 297-horsepower EX.
