Ramblings of an Odd Software Engineer

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

In my last post I talked about the trust factor. More specifically, I spoke about trusting our decisions, trusting ourselves and trusting trust. I have spent some time thinking on this and decided on an approach that I think will work for me - an approach that I think will help me build back my trust in myself and my trust in trust. The Trust Factor

In the Power of Solitude I mentioned trust as a very important factor to opening yourself to emotional sharing with anyone - to building real relationships that ease the pang of loneliness. Since thinking about it more, I realize that there is a very strong truth to that statement. But the truth is not in the ability to trust others - but in the ability to trust our own judgment about others - the ability to trust ourselves. (more…)

The Power of Solitude

You guessed it. I am hung up on the topic of loneliness. I think am beginning to believe that there is a power in solitude. When I am alone sometimes I am bored, sometimes it makes me unhappy - to the point of being depressed. But more and more often these days I feel satisfied.

I know that by nature we should all be social persons, we should be enjoying the company of other people and enjoying activities that allow us to share our emotions with someone else. But the problem arises when you do not have the trust factor that allows you to share your emotions. For quite a while that inability to share left me feeling depressed and lonely. However, lately I have been finding “The Power of Solitude”.

The power of solitude is the expression that is used to describe the state of feeling good and adequate on being alone. I know that you should not always be alone but at least when you are alone you shouldn’t feel that bad.

What makes a person unable to stay alone is the external dependency, just like some people are dependent on drugs others are dependent on being with other people. I think that in order to be able to truly enjoy and share with others I first need to learn how to be satisfied with my own company.

Loneliness vs Being Alone

We have all heard the expression being alone in a crowd. But I do not think that it applies to loneliness as many would have it. You can be alone in a crowd yet yet not feel the desolate feeling of loneliness. Maybe you are lone because you just do not fit in - you are apart from the others and that is the way you want it.

Loneliness comes when you are apart from other people but you want to belong - you want to be part of the crowd. The feeling of loneliness can occur when you are physically alone and you want someone near, or when you are in a crowd of people you do not identify with.

Loneliness is defined as being dejected by the awareness of being alone. Alone is defined as being apart from others; solitary.

Spinning the Web

Odd Software EngineerI started this blog – truthfully, to make money. I wanted to try to ensure that I had a good cash flow coming in when the winter months hit. You see I moved to Colorado and live kind of off the beaten path. I am not so sure how easy it will be for me to get to town and line up new web jobs once the snowfall hits and for a web designer/software engineer meeting with clients is imperative.

So I read about blogging – tried to pick a subject matter that would have a primary focus, tried to follow the ‘rules’ and started blogging. (more…)

EMO - Music -> Fashion -> Pain

This was not a topic that interested me very much till today. Sure, I have heard the term; had a vague idea about EMO, but I never really cared to delve into the subject until a family member ended up in a psych ward because of her involvement in the EMO movement. Needless to say, I spent most of my day researching and thought I would share that knowledge and my thoughts with you. (more…)

Frustrating Browsing

I snatch odd moments during the day to browse through the Odd News from various sources hoping to find at least one story that I can write a commentary on and, hopefully, get readers interested enough to post their own thoughts. Sometimes I break from my news perusal because I need to get back to my primary job, web design. But other times I break out of frustration. Call me old-fashioned if you want — but a vast majority of these ‘odd news’ stories show the decay of today’s moral values. (more…)

Man Beheads Tame Hotel Duck

Another danger of being drunk in public.

This 26 yr old man from Denver was arrested in St. Paul after he pulled the head off of one of the hotels tame ducks because he was hungry. (see story) Security guards and other hotel visitors were watching as this occurred. The fact that this young man now faces charges is no surprise. However, the Humane Society brought up that the hotel should reconsider having ducks in the lobby; for their safety. The words in the article were pretty harsh. And yet there was little to no mention of the ducks living conditions. (more…)

Paparizzi Proposals (Video)

Paparizzi photos usually involve celebrities and politicians trying to grab a moment of privacy. Well, now according to this report (watch video) shown on Good Morning America this morning, the intimate moment when a man proposes to his bride-to-be is being caught on film. A new trend has risen where men are hiring photographers to take pictures during the proposal without the bride-to-be knowing. (more…)

Reduced Sentence for Chili Finger Woman?

I am sure you remember the original story - it started in March, 2005 when a diner at Wendy’s claimed to find a finger in her chili (see story). The story progressed as the unfortunate diner filed a lawsuit against Wendy’s and then dropped the lawsuit less than three weeks later. As the investigation continued it came out that the diner, Anna Ayala, and her husband concocted the entire story using a finger of a friend that was cut off in an accident. Anna and her husband were given nine year sentences for the scam.
