Starting with a Diet Coke, what can I trade for?
Diet Coke

So I was sitting at work the other day kinda bored outta my brains during my lunch break. As I was sitting there I noticed I was staring off into the distance at a bottle of Diet Coke that had been sitting on my desk for around a week. During this time I had a thought… “I wonder if I could trade this for something better”.

So I went to see one of my workmates, and she was instantly on board. Hence is born MissionToTrade.com. The basic idea is simple how many times can I trade an item for something bigger and better? The idea has been done once before by Kyle and his One Red Paperclip, however I have had a similar idea for many years now and using Kyle for inspiration I thought… heck I wonder what an Auzzie can pull off under similar circumstances.

So please have a look at my new site MissionToTrade.com tell your friends, your family… anyone and everyone who you think might get a giggle out of it. Also I have to say the blogging community has been awesome so far. I contacted a few bloggers wondering if they would support me and do a post on their blog’s to tell their readers about me and so far the response has been overwhelming.

I would like to say a massive thanks to the following bloggers for posting about MissionToTrade.com:
1. Random Musings of a Deranged Soul
2. Deciphering Myself
3. This Woman’s Blog
4. D65Blade

If you wish to post about Mission To Trade please do so and let me know and I will add your link here and on the MissionToTrade Site.

Well I just thought I would let all my readers here know about the new site, keep an eye on it and as I said if you can spread the word I think the mission will be a huge success.

You try to do something nice!

I was on the way to work yesterday, and when I sat down on the bus I noticed that the seat next to me was quite wet. So to stop anyone sitting on it and getting a wet bum I decided to put my bag there (as I know what an annoyance ending up with a wet bum can be).

Over the course of the 15 min bus ride to work, a few people walked past, most of which gave me a dirty look. When I explained it to them most of them gave me even a worse dirty look and moved on. Out of all of the people only two thanked me for saving them from a cold wet bum.

The one that really got me though was the last gal close to the end of my trip. She just gave me the WORST death stare ever and made me feel really bad. Here I was trying to do her a favour and this is how I am repayed.

*pouts* I don’t normally piss and moan but the whole ordeal made me really uncomfortable and would make me consider about doing the right thing next time. My trip would have been a lot easier if I had let the first person sit there.

(End Rant)

Well I just cannot understand why people do that, I will keep doing what I see to be the right thing… but it just makes you feel really bad when you try to do something nice for people.

Oh well, I am off to finish work then have a night with my lovely young girlfriend. She will cheer me up by tormenting me and letting me torment her back *YAAY* hahaha.

Behave yourselves…

Sites now on a new server!

Heya everyone,
This is just a quick post to apologise for all the maintenance windows over the last week. The site is now back up and running on a new dedicated server. If you are looking for the details of what has happened and a recommendation for a new web host look at the full post of the move to my new dedicated server on Geeky Habitat.

Please let me know if you experience any issues with the site or have any comments you would like to give.

Stuart ;)

Sorry I have been away!

Ok, so this week has been like a ghost town here on Secluded Habitat and also on Geeky Habitat. I thought I should explain why. This will be the shortened post without all the geeky details. If you are interested in reading the full geeky version please do take a squiz at the full post on Geeky Habitat.

So the first thing that has been taking up my time will be one that is interesting for all of my readers that use Entrecard. For those of you who do not know what Entrecard is, it is a form of social networking cross advertising for blog authors. You will see to the right hand side of this post a little box with a yellow ‘E’ underneath it. This is the Entrecard advertisement widget that I have on my blog. When people visit they can ‘drop’ their Entrecard here to let me know that they have visited, and if they would like to, visit the current advertising blog that is above the ‘E’.

So now that I have told you what Entrecard is, there is a website that has been created with the top 300 fastest loading Entrecard blogs that have the Entrecard above the fold (i.e. you do not need to scroll to see it). The site is called PowerDropping.com. Recently the author of PowerDropping put out a request for assistance as he has found the site becoming too large to handle the maintenance.

So I set out on a mission to help out as I have loved the site thus far. I wrote a whole back end management system so that the submission, approval, and addition of new blogs to PowerDropping is now a lot more automated. I have also agreed to volunteer my time to assist in managing those submissions etc. So this week has been quite hectic with a lot of my spare time going to getting the site back up to date as it had not been updated in nearly a month.

Finally I have just moved my site over onto a new webserver which is more than twice as powerful as my old server. This means you should notice better loading times of the site, and daily scheduled maintenance should no longer cause my sites to run slowly.

So… I apologise for not being around. I have a few good things under my bonnet to post. Keep an eye out in the near future.

Stuart ;)

Site Updates and New Additions

Howdy howdy once again everyone. I have been working hard both here and on GeekyHabitat to get some new security updates pushed out to both blogs and to put in place some new features that I hope will make your lives more pleasant and even to some degree easier.

I have released three new features here on SecludedHabitat that I hope will get you jumping up and down with joy *grins*.

The first is that I have finally turned on Gravatars. Basically for those of you that comment on blogs a lot, you will know of www.Gravatar.com. By signing up on the site you can get your email address enabled to have a Global Avatar which will show up on any blogs that you use the same email address on when you comment.

So I guess it just adds a little more personalisation to the site for you… my readers. If you don’t have a Gravatar why not get one now.

The second major update is that I have added a new method of logging in. I have added the ability for people to log in with an OpenID. This means that rather than having to sign up for a new account on my blogs in order to log in (and for example get the benefits of nofollow on comments for logged in users), you can now log in with an OpenID account. It is rather difficult to explain so if you would like to get an OpenID account or find out more about what it really is take a look at OpenID What It Is.

The final update to SecludedHabitat is that I have added the ability to chat with me. You will see at the top of the menu on the left hand side a new “Chat with me” and “Live Support” button. If you see me online (the image will show this) and you want to say hello or chat, please do not hesitate to drop me a line. I would be delighted to chat with some of my readers to get to know you and get to know what sort of things you do and don’t like on my blog.

Lastly I just wanted to let you know about a new little beauty I have added to my GeekyHabitat blog. I decided that because people are always asking me what software I would recommend for ‘X’ purpose, that I would set up a bit of my top list of software that I use and recommend. So take a look at My Recommendations Here.

Well, I am off for a few days, I am going on a mini-holiday of sorts. I hope to have some great photos and stories when I return on Sunday.

Until then you all behave yourselves now ya hear ;)

Amazingly Simple Home Remedies!

This is something I have pulled out of the archives for you today. I was going through a lot of the funny emails I have received over the years and I came across this one from a few months back.

Everyone has home remedies, and home remedies can do a lot of things, like cure ailments (lol or make you sicker depending).

So a list of home remedies for you today (Disclaimer… This *is* a joke):

AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES - Author Unknown

  1. If you’re choking on an ice cube simply pour a cup of boiling water
down your throat. Presto! The blockage will instantly remove itself.
  2. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone
else to hold while you chop.
  3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs about lifting the toilet seat by using
    the sink.
  4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for
a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use
    a timer.
  5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you
from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze
    button.
  6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you’ll
    be afraid to cough.
  7. If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
  8. AND NOW for my Favourite of the LOT: You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does, use the duct tape.

Well I hope you have learned something new today. Do you have any home remedies to add (serious or otherwise?)

Stuart

Ever had a technical question?

As you guys know I have recenty started my new blog, GeekyHabitat. One of the reasons I started this blog was so that I could unleash my geekiness. However there was also another reason, I wanted a place where my readers could interact and really get into what I was blogging about.

To this end a lot of the tutorials that I will be writing on GeekyHabitat I would love to do on topics that you would like to see. I have put together a Contact Form so that you can easily get into contact with me.

If there is something that you do not know how to do on a computer, or something that has always confused you or you would like more information on please drop me a line through the Contact Form and let me know what it is and as much detail as you have. I will of course not be able to do every request for a tutorial however when I see something particularly interesting or if I begin to see trends for a certain request then those are the tutorials that I will focus on.

I wasn’t going to duplicate this post here on SecludedHabitat.com but then I thought that some of my regular readers here may just have some ideas of what sort of tutorials they would like to see done.

I am also going to have to work out a difficulty rating system. Of course initially I am going to have to toy with this idea a bit but if I can rate the difficulty of a tutorial then that should also help categorise them differently.

So… my dear reader, have a think and if there is something you would like to see, or if you have ever had a really tough technical question (or even something simple) by all means drop me a line.

Stuart ;)

A Favour to ask ;)

Heya everyone,
I thought that I would extend my arms out to my fellow bloggers, readers and all around nice people and I thought I would ask a favour. I have just decided to get myself a new digital camera. (For the model see Canon IXUS 960IS) Seeing as a lot of what I take photos of is for my blogs (both here and GeekyHabitat.com you can see my Blogging Gallery Here) I was hoping I could ask my readers a favour.

I was hoping to see if I could get 30 people to sign up for a 14 day Free trial of Box.net (online file storage service). Box.net basically gives you what could be thought of as a USB Thumb drive in a website, so there is no forgetting your USB key or leaving it somewhere. You get all the space and speed of the web.

[edit] I have also decided to add in another trial you could do instead with a company that I have used many times before. GoToMyPC, a great way of accessing your PC remotely while you are at work or on the road. This is run by Citrix (for those geeks out there that know of the Citrix company). I will need a few more if people sign up for this trial… but hey, I am not trying to cover the whole cost… just a percentage

If I can get 30 people to trial this I will get enough money to cover the cost of the new camera (as the link I provide will be an affiliate link). As a note I have signed up and am trialling the service already myself to ensure for my readers that it is legit and they will not get into any strife (as that is the last thing I would want)… and to be honest it is a pretty sweet site.

On top of this I will give you a special mention in a post on here (which currently has a PageRank of 3) and on GeekyHabitat.com and will give you a link to your blog/site/etc.

Otherwise if you would prefer you could throw me a little donation via paypal by using the paypal button below too.

I will keep updates running as to the current count of how many people have signed up to trials. And will have big big BIG thanks coming to you all.

If you decide that you would like to, just click the link below, sign up for the trial and then use the Contact Me page to let me know what site you would like mentioned. Please note this is not required… just a blogger asking for a little flavour (erm… I mean favour).

Wisdom Teeth Removed
Wisdom Teeth Removed

Well I have finally had my wisdom teeth out, and I am still on the road to recovery. I have to say in the beginning I thought I was recovering really well but it has taken a lot longer than I would have hoped. To be honest I am really looking forward to getting back into work, as this last two weeks have been really slow and boring. Unfortunately I have been suffering dizzy spells (and when I tried to return to work yesterday it got so bad I lost my breakfast so to speak).
