For the love you have given me.
From the first day I came into this world, your gentle hands were there to hold me, shelter and cradle me with kindness.
As I grew, you kept me from harm, warm from the cold, and shielded from the pain of hunger.
You taught me to say the words “Mama”, “Dada” and much to your regret, “NO”.
You helped me take that first timid step, and squeal with joy at the sight of silliness and fuzzy animals.
As I grew from baby to child, you stayed strong by my side
Kissing away boo boos and wiping away tears.
Fights with girlfriends and broken toys seem insurmountable
until your patient voice calmed me.
Math homework, driving to ballet lessons, helping choose the perfect prom dress…You did it all.
Never did I hear you complain or falter in your devotion to me.
Because of this, I’ve grown strong and proud with your love.
Ready fro a new journey in my life.
I have your guidance to lead me as I follow you down the path to motherhood.
I know your strength and knowledge will live on in the child that is to come.
Although words can never be enough, I will say them again,
For no apparent reason, I get hiccups at times. No big deal but at times it’s a nuisance when I’m in a midst of a conversation and if it continues for a few minutes.
I usually take a few deep breaths and drink a glass of water to stop it.
Some experts say that it happens because of disturbances to the digestive system. Some say that it is because of twitches of the diaphragm. My Doc explains it further on why we hiccup.
Here are some remedies to stop hiccuping.
Plug your ears.
Put your fingers in your ears, but not too far. The rationale given is that this action causes a short-circuit to the nerve from your brain that controls hiccups.
Stick out your tongue.
Try sticking out your tongue.
Swallow some water.
Let the water quiet your nerves and interrupts the cycle.
Get distracted.
Get someone to interrupt your pattern of thoughts like doing something that scare you or change your focus of attention.
Hold your breath.
Try holding your breath by pinching your nose and closing your mouth.
Breath into a paper bag.
When you breathe into a paper bag, you increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream. This method makes your body busy getting rid of it.
Eat slowly and chew properly.
Eat slowly so that you can chew well. When you eat fast, you swallow a lot of air. Avoid eating too much so that your stomach don’t get overloaded.
Tickle the roof of your mouth.
Get a clean cotton swab and draw a line down the roof of your mouth. It will cause a tickle and will stop the spasm in your throat.
A woman motorcyclist banged my car. One side of my car reflector broke and there is a deep scratch.
She was lucky that she noticed my car signal as she was getting real close or she would have been seriously injured.
Before I could help her when she fell in the middle of the road, she was quick to get up. I helped push her motorcycle to the side.
She had a minor cut on her ankle and one side of her trouser was torn. I wanted to take her to the nearest clinic but she insisted to wait for her husband to come.
While waiting we talked and I tried to calm her down and make her feel comfortable. She was on her way to work. She admitted that she didn’t notice my car. I gave her some cash for her medical treatment to ease her burden.
When her husband came, the atmosphere changed. By his appearance, I could sense trouble. He was aggressive and angry. He provoked me but I kept telling myself to keep my cool.
At the back of my mind then I was wondering what I would do if he gets rough. At the same time I kept affirming to myself that everything was going to be alright.
And then I witnessed the way he treated his injured wife. He was harsh and hurled verbal abuse towards her. There wasn’t any compassion or respect.
He told her to get up and walk to the car, which was parked a few meters away. He walked off without giving her a hand.
I wanted to assist her and walk her to their vehicle but when I saw him turning back towards us, I changed my mind. And when he saw her get up, he left her again.
Before she walked off, we shook hands and she apologized for her husband’s rudeness. She cried, saying sorry several times.
I think her physical pain was bearable compared to her emotional and mental pains. And my guess is that she’s been going through some sort of abuse in her marriage.
Maybe I’m being judgmental. But I can’t help but assume such. Since her husband can’t treat her right in the presence of a stranger, I don’t think he would do any better at home.
As I drove off, the song, “Ain’t No Way To Treat A Lady” by Helen Reddy, played in my head.
I celebrated Mother’s day with my mom earlier this weekend because I won’t be free next week. I bought her a new sofa set as a gift. Something similar to this.
I could tell that she was very surprised and happy.
When I reached her home, it was very quiet. My mom has been single for more than 30 years and she is so used to it. She keeps her home clean and well maintained with the help of one of my brothers and sisters.
I’m not spending as much time as I should with my mom. I see her about four times a year. So whenever I visit her, I’ll make sure that we sit and talk and have our meals together.
I know she enjoys these moments as much I as do. I don’t know how many more mother’s day I will be celebrating with her. That makes it more important for me to make an effort to be with her.
I got stuck in a traffic jam for one a half hours on the way to work.
No, there wasn’t any accident.
Two large vehicles stalled in the left and middle lane that was going uphill.
Some people shouldn’t be allowed to drive because they are irresponsible.
If only they’d fill in their petrol and send their vehicles for routine maintenance, they’ll be doing a big favor for the rest of the road users.
One of the other inconsiderate habits of drivers is not having their cash ready to pay the toll charges. I have to wait too often for these people to look for cash when they stopped at the toll booths.
And there are those who don’t know how to make use of the turn signals and those who just love to jump queues.
There was once this guy who drove too close behind me and was trying to get me to move to the other lane. When I didn’t he showed his middle finger.
It wasn’t necessary but I guess he didn’t share my view.
When it was safe, I moved aside and drove ahead of him. And it was a sweet triumph when I saw from my rear view mirror that he was stuck.
It’s my wish that the Malaysian drivers would change their attitudes on the road. Imagine how less stressful our lives would be.
You place the eggs into the little grooves, screw on the top and cook. You no longer has to use the traditional method of boiling eggs like this.
When cooking hard boiled eggs, one of my problems is to determine when they are cooked. I found several tips and all of them are helpful.
Cover the eggs with cold water, bring to a boil and then set a timer for 10 minutes.
Someone suggested that when the eggs are at room temperature, you just need to boil it for 15 minutes. If they are taken from the fridge boil them for 18 minutes.
To have them perfect, place the eggs in egg cups for 5 minutes after removing them from the hot boiling water.
Another suggestion is to place the eggs in a covered pan of cold water. Once boiled, remove the pan from the heat, leave the cover and let it stand 20 minutes. After that, rinse the eggs in cold water. This method will leave the yolk an even yellow color minus the grey ring.
To keep the egg yolks in the center, stir the water.
Adding one tablespoon of vinegar or salt into the water before boiling will prevent the eggs from cracking.
You can still boil your cracked eggs. Before boiling, rub moistened salt over the shell to prevent the white from running out.
Since we are on the subject of eggs, here are additional tips.
If an egg falls and breaks on the floor, sprinkle the egg with salt and let stand a short time. Then wipe up with a cloth or paper towel. It comes up clean and leaves no mess on the floor.
To determine whether an egg is fresh or not, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh. If it rises to the surface, throw it away. This is because eggs shrink over time and air fills the pockets that are left, allowing them to float.
If you have hard-boiled eggs and get them mixed up with your fresh eggs, just spin them like a top. The hard-boiled eggs will spin and the fresh ones won’t.
To peel an egg without tearing up the whites after cracking the shell, start on the most rounded end of the egg, use a teaspoon and gently lift the shell.
To separate egg white from the yolk, break the egg into a funnel. The white will slip through and the yolk will stay in the funnel.
Here’s Gordon Ramsey’s scrambled egg breakfast. Easy.
