I like listening to tango and Gotan Project, and I liked being in southern Spain. I would have liked it more if I could have had conversations there with local people. For the future, if I want to go to large parts of the world, like South America for example, Spanish is going to be a useful language to learn. But only if it’s the right kindd of Spanish. I remember one PC insisting that Mexican was “Spanish.” It was – Microsoft’s version.

I took three years of high school Spanish, but I still can’t speak it. To be honest its a little embarassing being Hispanic and not knowing Spanish. Anyway, my plan is to start the online tutorials again. I just have to set aside the time.

I was able to cram up the first course since it’s a easy. But I still have some hard time on verbs.

I’m (Godwilling) going to Madrid this summer for immersion/Spanish instruction with the Don Quijote language institute. Does anyone have experience with this organisation? As of now I consider myself an advanced beginner, and can maintain basic conversation for a few minutes. I’ll consider this goal completed when I can talk about complicated things like politics and religion with a native speaker without having to reach for my Spanish dictionary every five minutes.

I started taking lessons in school, 16 year later I still haven’t mastered the language!
