May 14, Don't Trick the Google Ad Click
Placing Google AdSense units and navigation elements on a website can be accomplished without leading to accidental clicks. Webmasters should beware of doing otherwise.

The many ways webmasters can arrange their site elements could lead them to drop their AdSense units in inappropriate places. When there is a chance something could overlap the AdSense unit, people may click on the ad without meaning to do so.

It's something Google looks for in its continuing analysis of ad clicks. Accidental clicks can cost an advertiser money if they aren't sorted out of the legitimate clicks.

Google's AdSense blog addressed this recently, and gave examples of elements that should not have ad units placed too near to them:
  • In close proximity to Macromedia Flash games
  • Under pop-ups or download prompts
  • Near site navigation controls on your pages, such as drop-downs or menu links
Putting AdSense units too near these elements may make Google's mechanisms think they have been placed intentionally, in order to grab a few accidental clicks and boost the site's ad revenue. It's against Google's policies and could get a site punished for doing so.

In turn, publishers have been asking for clarification of AdSense placement. As a rule, they are encouraged to have their ad units integrated in a way that allows them to attract relevant ads based on the site's content.

A follow-up post from Google on this placement with regards to optimizing ads showed examples of acceptable and unacceptable implementations.

"You can understand that increasing the possibility of accidental clicks on your sites is not in the best interest of users or advertisers, and we wanted to make you aware of this risk,"
Mike Deeringer from AdSense Publisher Support wrote.

"This is why we ask that you maintain sufficient distance between your ads and any elements of your page on which users may often click."

The advice also comes across as a reminder that Google is watching for sites generating a lot of accidental clicks through their navigation or other element placement. It's likely that some people have realized the benefit of accidental clicks, forcing Google to give this subtle reminder about doing AdSense the right way.

Mar 17, Achieve Your Business Goals With An Action Plan
You are always more likely to succeed when you have a plan, and with business its no different. When starting up in business the chances of success are greatly increased if you have a business plan. Again if you want to expand your business, a business growth plan will be a valuable aid. Here is a 7-part action plan to help you achieve your business (and life) goals:

1. DECIDE exactly what you want in life in each area, and write it down. Make your goals clear, specific and measurable.

2. SPECIFY the most important skill you could develop to move you into the top 10 percent of people in your field. Then do something immediately to begin developing that skill.

3. IDENTIFY the major constraint or limiting factor inside yourself or in your world that is setting the speed at which you achieve your most important goal, and begin working on removing that constraint today.

4. DETERMINE your single biggest problem or obstacle in your business or personal life. Then focus all your time and attention on the possible solutions.

5. MAKE a list of what you would want to be, do and have if you had no limitations and you were absolutely guaranteed success.

6. ACCEPT complete responsibility for your life. From this day forward, refuse to make excuses or blame anyone for anything. Instead, take action to make your goals a reality.

7. REAFFIRM and visualize your goals of financial success, excellent health and personal happiness as a reality. Remember, the person you see is the person you will be.

Mar 6, Amani Children's Home
This year I've decided to raise money for a charity. This is something that is relativly new to me, apart from donating money to a fundraiser someone else has organised, I've never really got involved in the fund raising.

This time I am organising a series of fundraising events over the year to raise money for the Amani Children's Home. Amani Children's Home takes care of orphans and street-children at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It rescues children from malnutrition, homelessness, and abuse. Amani supports over 140 children and is committed to providing a safe place for children to grow in mind, body and spirit. See www.amanikids.org.

These fundraising events will include running a couple half marathons and climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. The first half marathon is this Snday March 11th - The Hastings Half-marathon: http://www.hastings-half.co.uk/

I have only been able to manage limited training - and with this course being one of the toughest half marathons around - I'm definitely going to have my work cut out for me.

If you want to donate, and this can be anything from 2 (or equivalent) upwards, visit my secure donation page at: http://www.justgiving.com/dougplatts

Thank you for all your support.

Doug Platts

Mar 1, Out bound linking
There has been alot of talk back and forth about the good and bad effects of out-bound linking. I just thought I would add my thoughts on subject.

While the occasional link to other related sites might not provide much search engine value, to a website owner many outbound links are an entirely different matter. If a site links to the most relevant sites on the theme, including the most important authority sites, the linking out site can gain major importance in Google.

That importance arrives in the form of being regarded as a hub site by Google. Along with the hub site status conferred upon sites that are like train stations for themed links, comes high search rankings. SEO professionals agree that becoming a hub site for a sites most important keywords is a worthwhile goal. Part of becoming a hub site involves linking out to related sites. Some of those sites might even be competitors.

There will always be people who leave a site for other places, as they are only a click away. Its really impossible to keep a web visitor captive on a site. The best solution is probably to provide a great site, to which visitors will return over and over, while linking to sites that provide additional theme-related information.

If a website owner wants to gain customers and clients, the onus rests on them to develop the best site possible. That situation will require outgoing links to other sites as well.

There is some definite long term advantage to linking out as well as offering immediate assistance to your sites visitors. Your site might be accorded the coveted hub site by Google, and the high search rankings that come with that status. You will be glad you linked to some other sites in that case.

With the holidays so near taxes are probably the last thing on your mind. But now is the perfect time to cut you 2006 tax bill. To save money, look at how much revenue your business made this year and then estimate for next year. Be aware that your best tax maneuvers will different if this year was an unusually good one, or if you are expecting a jump in sales next year. If your revenue will rise next year Hold off paying any expenses until January - you will need the write-offs more next year. Pull in as much revenue as you can collect this year. If you forecast a slump next year Now is the time to defer income into 2007 and prepay as many expenses as you can. Make any equipment purchases, or prepay fees now.
