Best Damn Photos in the World

Wisps

Dandelion wisps clinging to a tomato vine ƒ/4.0, 1/125 s, 400 ISO

It’s funny how, when seen from the right vantage point (such as through a macro lens), the smallest and simplest things can appear so beautiful.

Linnea Wren

Professor, Art and Art History, Gustavus Adolphus College ƒ/3.2, 1/200 s, 100 ISO

We took this shot in the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library near the back in the reference section. I looked a little funny lying on my stomach, but I am really happy with how the shot turned out.

L.A. Trip Winners

Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to everyone who submitted a famous death scene.

The Winners

The Film Premiere

The film will premiere in Los Angeles on October 14. If you are going to be in L.A. then or if you have any questions for Spike Lee, let me know.

Joyce Sutphen

Associate Professor, English, Gustavus Adolphus College ƒ/5.0, 1/200 s, 100 ISO

Joyce Sutphen is a wonderful poet and one of the sweetest people I know.

This photo was taken in her office during an independent study session with three students.

Laurent was very nice when I met him.

Win a Trip to a Spike Lee Movie Premiere in L.A.

I am giving out one ticket (including round trip airfare) to join me at the Los Angeles premiere of the collaboratively created film under the direction of Spike Lee. To decide the lucky winner, I am having a contest. Here’s the scoop.

How to Win

We want you to recreate your favorite movie death scenes in a Be Kind Rewind style, using a mobile device (like your cell phone). Submit as many scenes as you like. I will pick the best submission based on effort, originality, and creativity. Airfare is only available to people within the United States. Sorry everybody else!

  1. Recreate your movie death scene.
  2. Set up a profile on Nokia Productions.
  3. Upload your movie death scene to Nokia Productions (or here if you have problems uploading).
  4. Tag your movie death scene with “famousdeathscenes”.
  5. Leave a comment on this post with a link to your submission.

Bonus!

But wait, there’s more. Since your death scenes will be submitted to the Nokia Productions movie, they may end up in the final cut of the Spike Lee movie. How cool is that?

Get Filmin’

The deadline for submissions to this contest ends at the end of the day on Wednesday, August 20, 2008.

Greg Mason
greg-mason-1

Professor, English, Gustavus Adolphus College ƒ/2.8, 1/125 s, 100 ISO

Professor Mason let me set my lights up during one of his classes. It was a pretty tight squeeze getting around all of the students while trying to be as invisible as possible, but I think I managed pretty well.

In the first shot, I really like the gesture that Greg is making with his hands and how his dynamic, red sweater is contrasted against the stark, blue background. In the second shot I was happy to bring in some of the students and show that interaction taking place.

Three Years

Wow. This past year went fast. So fast that I am forced to break with tradition this year and won’t be having a bunch of guests posting.

In any case, thank you for sticking around so long. I hope that you keep coming back for more and keep on leaving comments even if they are short and snappy–they are often quite encouraging.

What’s been happening around here?

If you’re new, forgetful, or just curious, these are what I consider to be the big happenings of the past year.
