DNS Bug
Dan Kaminsky: Upgrade Your DNS Now!

Dan Kaminsky is a well-known and respected security researcher, particularly famous for his work with DNS -- the fundamental naming technology which powers the Internet. When he announced a protocol-level flaw in DNS affecting almost every available implementation, vendors and other security researchers paid attention.

Now it's time for administrators and users to pay attention. On August 7, the Internet might get much more dangerous. Patches are available to ameliorate the problem. In this video, recorded at Foo Camp 2008, Dan explains how he discovered the flaw and what you need to do to keep your users and their data safe.

Database TDD
NJ SQL UG Meeting Tonight

Success in object-oriented agile development is currently being achieved with a technique known as test driven development TDD. In database development however, TDD practices are not wide-spread and development teams struggle with applying the TDD principles to the SQL language. This is a problem, because it leads to poorly tested code. In turn, not having the appropriate test cases, makes it difficult to improve your existing database design. Not implementing TDD practices in the database, overtime, leads to a decaying architecture and can hinder the evolution of the overall application.

Speakers: Dennis Lloyd Jr and Sebastian Meine from SQLity

Now on XBOX Live!
Xbox 360 and Netflix Team Up

I've been watching the Microsoft Press conference live from E3, Major Nelson has been Tweeting all the news.

Video, movies and TV content is coming to XBOX Live, but no one mentioned of it being streamed in Silverlight.

Yahoo say's No
Yahoo! Rejects Microsoft/Icahn Search and Restructuring Proposal

Microsoft's share price was at a seven year high when the idea of acquiring Yahoo was first announced. Shares of MSFT plummeted till it was announced that Microsoft was no longer interested in Yahoo. Over the past week with a new attempt to force Yahoo into a deal, shares of MSFT have dropped to a two year low.

Build your Own Search Service
BOSS -- The Next Step in our Open Search Ecosystem

BOSS Build your Own Search Service with the Yahoo web services platform. Developers can now create and launch Web search products by utilizing the same infrastructure and technology that powers Yahoo! Search.

Opening up Yahoo Search to the developer community is a great idea. When I was at Yahoo! Hack Day last year the Search Team did not participate, but the networked effect from this initiative could be huge. Go Yahoo!

Microsoft Partner Conference
Registration is closed for the Microsoft World Wide Partner conference and they forgot to put the SOLD OUT graphic on the site.

Paul is not attending the conference formerly known as Velocity for the first time in five years. I was the first blogger granted Press credentials into a Microsoft Press Room back at Toronto in '04 and again in Minneapolis in '05, Boston in '06 and last year in Denver.

Everyone is talking about Social Media today, but we had a vibrant Microsoft developer community of bloggers back in '04. Then the talk was about the New Microsoft, the community, how they listened and got it. Our blogging efforts were affirmed by the Developer Evangelist Team when they established Channel 9.

All has changed, changed utterly. Microsoft PR stopped trusting us and turned the Partner conference, TechEd and Channel 9 into informericals that they can control.

Microsoft Acquires Powerset
Microsoft to Acquire Powerset

Just got the news on Twitter from none other then Powerset
Official announcement about Microsoft's acquisition of Powerset.

Powerset is a new search algorithm that brings an understanding of the intent and meaning behind the words. It's still in beta and I've been using it, but up till now it just indexes Wikipedia. Powerset's reach will grow to indexing blogs, forums and pages from all around the WWW.

Powerset will join our core Search Relevance team, remaining intact in San Francisco. Powerset brings with it natural language technology that nicely complements other natural language processing technologies we have in Microsoft Research.
Powerset joins Live Search

Clay Shirky

Clay Shirky at the Personal Democracy Forum 2008 in NYC. He called this talk Politics As If Everybody Can Participate. I recall when Clay was on panels at conferences on blogging, but he never really was a blogger. He has a new book, Here Comes Everybody and it too is about revolutionizing the social order through this Internet.

Bill Gates the Hacker
Bill Gates and the Greatest Tech Hack Ever

Bill Gates has pulled off one of the greatest hacks in technology and business history, by turning Microsoft's success into a force for social responsibility. Imagine imposing a tax on every corporation in the developed world, collecting $100 per white-collar worker per year, and then directing one third of the proceeds to curing AIDS and malaria. That, effectively, is what Bill Gates has done.

This is the legacy Bill Gates wants people to remember and we wish him the best in his next adventure.

Intel Don't Know Graphics
Et Tu, Intel? Chip Giant Won’t Embrace Microsoft’s Windows Vista

Intel has at last conceded that their integrated graphics solutions suck, but any young gamer could have told you that. Windows Vista requires a good GPU to shine and Intel despite it's innovation on the CPU can't find a way to create a capable graphics processing unit.

Intel has partnered with nVidia for some graphics solutions, but they are not on speaking terms at the moment. The inability to write software drivers has held nVidia back since the launch of Windows Vista and this could have been their time to shine.
