PSN IDs on PlayStation.com, 'Underground' closes

playstation.com
Synergy. Can you dig it? Sony does, finally noticing those 14 million accounts stranded on the console-side of PlayStation Network. We imagine the meeting went a little something like this:
  • Exec One: You see, we've got 14 million people over here [*motions to his right*]. But what if we could take them [*lifts his hands up*] and stick 'em over here, too? [*motions back to his left*]
  • Exec Two: So are you gonna eat that last Mint Milano or what?
  • Exec One: No -- well ... let's split it.
  • Exec Two: Deal.
The result? PSN IDs are being incorporated into PlayStation.com and, at a later date, PlayStation.Blog. Doing so will make your friends list and other features accessible through a web browser -- oh my! On a solemn note, these changes bring PlayStation Underground to its inevitable end, but members can hold on to some of the good times by merging their Underground accounts with their PSN IDs. And this is only the beginning, promises PSN senior director Susan Panico: "before this year is over we'll have more enhancements for your gamer profile." Dare we say, a New PlayStation Experience?

Jack Thompson pays Florida Bar $42K

Filed under:

Former anti-games attorney Jack Thompson has paid $42,525 to the Florida Bar, reports GamePolitics. The figure represents the Bar's cost to prosecute Thompson during his disbarment proceedings. So, not only was he disbarred, but Thompson ended up paying the people that took away his livelihood.

The real beauty in this story is how the information became public. The Florida Bar didn't leak this -- it was John Bruce Thompson himself that sent out an e-mail this morning, complaining the Florida Supreme Court hadn't yet cashed the check. Even while teetering on the precipice of irrelevance, Thompson still makes a good story.

Majesco responds to PETA's Cooking Mama parody

Majesco kept it classy in its response to PETA's Cooking Mama parody. Taking the whole situation in stride, the publisher quoted the fictional Mama as saying, "I would never put rat in my Ratatouille. Like any accomplished cook, I create my recipes to appeal to a broad range of tastes and preferences. My only goal is to ensure you leave the table well fed."

Majesco went on to note that the company's latest entry in the franchise, Cooking Mama World Kitchen, features over 25 vegetarian-friendly recipes. It also states that Mama is not a vegetarian, but "fully supports" the humane treatment of animals, as her doggie "protégé" Max will make his debut in the latest game -- hopefully, not as an entrée. Kudos to Majesco for incorporating some flair into what would otherwise have been another boring press release about a game launch. And thanks to PETA for making the whole laugh possible.

THQ and Activision settle box art suit

It looks like there won't be a long, drawn-out lawsuit over box art between THQ and Activision, regarding the two publisher's respective off-road Baja games. According to Patent Arcade, Activision has just gone ahead and changed the cover art for its title, SCORE International Baja 1000: The Official Game. We've posted the new look after the break.

Considering the game released a couple of weeks ago, we're not exactly sure how this affects copies already on shelves. Regardless, it appears THQ is appeased and has dismissed its lawsuit.

Judge shoots Dead Rising lawsuit in the head

US Magistrate Judge Richard Seeborg has dismissed MKR Group's lawsuit claiming that Capcom's Dead Rising infringed on the copyrights of its horror film, Dawn of the Dead. The judge agreed with Capcom's argument that the few similarities that MKR Group could cite were overridden by "the wholly unprotectable concept of humans battling zombies in a mall during a zombie outbreak."

The best part is that the judge sided on one issue with Capcom in the most back-handed way possible. MKR alleged as one of its complaints that the two works were parodies of rampant consumerism. Seeborg wrote in his decision that the theme of Dead Rising is "confined to the killing of zombies" in an attempt to discover the cause of a zombie infestation, and "the social commentary MKR draws from Dawn of the Dead, in other words, appears totally absent from the combat focus found in Dead Rising." We see the judge's point that the "theme" of consumerism isn't throughout the game, but it certainly is the catalyst for the events. You want spoilers, check the Wiki page.

New Avatar fashions planned every two weeks for six months

An Avatar ad on the NXE states that new fashions will be added every two weeks and will be noted by a gold star. Xbox Live Product Unit Manager Jerry Johnson confirms that new accessories will be added for at least the next half a year.

According to Johnson, the new fashions will be implemented in packs. We've already noticed that some clothing options have been taken away, like the "wife-beater" (no, it wasn't called that on the NXE). No word yet if these packs will cost anything, but we do know that Microsoft is considering it. What, you don't think the virtual Louis Vuitton bag or Marc Jacobs outfit (not the game designer) will be free, do you?

Epic explains Gears 2's ranking system

Don't understand the Gears of War 2 rank system? Trust us, you are totally not alone. To alleviate some confusion, Gears 2 Community Manager SixOkay (guessing that's a pseudonym) has outlined how the game's inane touched ranking system works. The whole thing uses Microsoft's TrueSkill system, which itself is based on chess' Elo rating system.

The system doesn't just track wins/losses for rank, but also notes what team is favored to win the match. Horde Mode and private matches won't affect rank, but quitting games will lower it. Despite the system lacking the transparency and addictive nature of the CoD4 and Halo systems, at least we get how it works now ... sorta.
