THE DUMBING OF AMERICA
The Dumbing of America

My wife comes from a middle eastern background, with family from India, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. I've often asked her why - going beyond any cultural disposition toward such behavior - people in that region seem so angry and distrustful of toward anything besides family and religion. Her answer is clear: it is a result of sheer ignorance, plain and simple. What she means by that is that many people in these regions are essentially illiterate and disconnected from the modern world. Their world view is shaped by the 'media' they consume, i.e. family and religion. Those two forces become the guiding lights in their life. But he who controls the message controls the truth. Radical Imams can distort the message of Islam, families be ... READ MORE >>

MONTEREY BAY STATE AQUARIUM
Monterey Bay State Aquarium

This place makes it almost too easy to get some cool shots. I like to hope my eye was good enough to capture some interesting angles, but the deep sea is so alien it's almost hard not to get some sort of interesting shot. Besides cropping and levels most of these images are minimally processed. It was shot handheld with all natural light, Nikon D50, Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. My favorite set are the squid, though the shot of numerous fish on blue is also a good one (believe it or not, the shot was not faked, they were actually swimming that way). SONG OF THE MOMENT: STEREOLAB - FLUORESCENCES
Song of the moment: Stereolab - Fluorescences

Gotta say I love this song...just came across it a few days ago and have been looping it like a lunatic ever since. I know I'm 12 years late to the game with this song, but I figure it's worth the mention none the less.   ... READ MORE >>

I HATE TO GET POLITICAL, BUT IN 2008 IT'S UNAVOIDABLE
I hate to get political, but in 2008 it's unavoidable

For the most part I try and avoid any source with overt political agendas - even when I might agree with them - but in today's ridiculously polarized climate it's kind of hard to avoid. I also try to avoid cherrypicking my sources to prove a point, but for the sake of contrasting the unashamedly right-wing and left-wing, I'm going to do just that. First up is The American Conservative, a magazine formed by Scott McConnell with Pat Buchanan and Taki Theodoracopulos in 2002. When Mr. Buchanan is one of your founders, it's pretty clear that this isn't a pseudo-conservative mag, but the real-deal. Anyway, they just ran an op-ed piece by Andrew J. Bacevich, an openly conservative professor of history and international relations at Boston U ... READ MORE >>

MY COMMENT WAS CHOSEN 'COMMENT OF THE DAY' ON READ WRITE WEB
My comment was chosen 'Comment of the Day' on Read Write Web

Didn't expect this, but my comment on a post dealing with the effect the internet has on reading habits was chosen as the 'Comment of the Day' on Read Write Web! In case you're not aware, Read Write Web is a super-blog with over 871,000 monthly unique visitors. It earned me a $30 Amazon gift certificate which is very cool, especially considering that I didn't even know a contest was going on :-) Comment of the Day: Reading (and Writing) Online  ... READ MORE >>

REACHING THE INFLUENCERS OF 'COOL'
Reaching the influencers of 'cool'

Can true 'cool' ever really be created? Short answer...no. The book Chasing Cool makes that pretty clear, and any 'cool kid' knows that they're a really tough target to reach. They look to their peers for definitions of cool, not to the media. Which leads me to this golden piece of satire from America's Finest News Source According to new market research, a multimillion dollar broadcast, radio, print, billboard, and online viral campaign launched Monday by the Axiom Marketing Agency tested "off the charts" among its target market of hip, urban 18- to 34-year-olds who base their actions and opinions entirely on the suggestions of ad campaigns. "This is exactly the type of customer we're looking to reach," said the ca ... READ MORE >>

THE GLAM WRITER'S DEN
The Glam Writer's Den

A short edit for Glam Media showcasing their writer's den at the Library Hotel during New York Fashion Week 2008. Production Notes I helped guide the production of this somewhat in the sense that I gave advice as to what would and wouldn't work, but otherwise all the production was largely due to Ivy Mulholland and her co-worker Christina Cece. I took the assets and created this short showcase piece to highlight the event.
